Jane River Track

Tue 06 Apr, 2010 8:29 pm

Just returned from walking the Jane River track for an Easter get away with a mate of mine. So sad to see a good track being left to go to rot. Track overgrown in many parts especially the start and a section on the rise to Marget Pass going south. Walking it you can expect a usual good dose of South west mud. Many trees fallen over the track which makes for slow and hindered progress. Some of the bridges are due to collapse in the next few years so care needs to be taken in their use. We walked into the Jane river hut in just over 9 hours returned today in 7.5 (didn't want to get caught in a weather change!). Recommend two day each way. Margret Pass not a bad tent camp site although a bit damp. Small water source 10 -15 min further south. All in all a great long weekend!

Nope, it's one of the old tracks that doesnt get used anymore, therefore it no longer exists. It's still marked on the old maps though. And if you know where to look it can be found after a bit of a hunt.

Thanks mate. Good news I found it on a old editions map I have!

It is good to see the track gradually being reclaimed by nature. It improves the wilderness aspect and it keeps the quad bikes out. It is still walkable, albeit slow in places due to fallen trees.

Don't let those old maps go easily.

Edit: Listmap still shows the Jane track.
