Dumb question

How often is road access to Lake St. Clair (from the east) restricted in some fashion?

How long is a piece of string?

Not often. The Targa may affect some sections; bushfires can cause closures but that has been fairly rare until now; snow is not normally an issue on that part of the Lyell. Lakes and Marlborough Highways do get closures due to snow over winter but it's not usually more than a day or two. Roadworks can cause slowdowns but not normally closures.

As nnw said. I would add any time you really need a quick run up to start a trip or return to Hobart.

Thanks. I'm personally familiar with the bushfire scenario. I was wondering more about winter conditions. Specifically the question of whether it would be a good idea to have something more than a standard 2wd vehicle.

Mostly it's not necessary. There are a few sections of road that can get very icy but snow is not normally a problem. Although AWDs and SUVs are incredibly popular in Tassie, especially amongst bushwalkers.
