Information on walking from Ada Lagoon to Lake Olive

Postby Robbo » Fri 08 Aug, 2008 4:44 pm

Hello All

In the right forum now, I think. :)

As noted in the heading, I'm interested in any information anyone may have on the kind of walking from Ada or Talinah Lagoon to Lake Olive, or that general direction? How difficult and scrubby is the Great Pine Tier this far Southeast? I am reasonably familiar with Bernes Valley, Lake Antimony and Theresa Lagoon, but have not visited South of this area.

Any information would be most appreciated.

Regards

From Antimony to Olive is fairly similar as Talinah area, except a bit hillier in between all the lakes, and a bit scrubbier.

Thanks for the information. I am looking to walk via this way onto Chinamans Plain and then to the Mountains of Jupiter and Junction Lake.

Thanks again

Hi Robbo, there are a few ways of getting from Ada to Olive then Chinamens plains etc.
From Ada to Antimony you can follow the old 4wd track which ran right to the hut (no5) at Antimony.
Or you can turn off at Christy's creek , to the sw passing Terry tarn and shortcutting to Theresa lagoon then going west to Powena creek and picking up the track to Antimonythen over past Silver lake to lake Galaxias. From Galaxias travel se down Spear creek to Chummy lake then sw to lake Naomi where an old 4wd track can be found about midway along the western shore where there used to be one of Dick Ried's huts. There may still be the wing of a light plane at this spot.
Yet another way to reach lake Antimony is to walk wsw from the northern end of Talinah lagoon passing south of a small lagoon t5hen past Lina tarn and making a bit of a rough decent of the Great Pine Tier to a small tarn east of Antimony then nw and sw to Silver lake and on to Naomi
From Naomi head sw over the hill to Olive and Olive lagoon. Here the Little river can be crossed at the s end of Olive lagoon and then back up the other side to the top of the lagoon where a faint track leads off west , uphill following some clearer areas to Mary tarn and lake Loretta.
The bush in this area is quite light and it's not far then to lake Malbena which can be passed on it's ne side giving access to more open country beyond which I have still to explore.
A quicker way to Chinamans plains is to go up along the Pine river valley past Silver lake turning west at about Ah Chees lake andgoing around the northern end of Three Arm lake and on to Chinamans plains.
I hope this is of sowe help

Thanks for assisting with this description. It is very helpful. I'm planning to walk in the area in early January next year, and it is an area that I have looked at on the map regularly and wondered what it was like.

Thanks again for the information

One of my friends in Tassie tells me there is a wing on one side of Olive, and the fuselage on the other, but it seems from your description that these are actually on Naomi. Is this right?

Robbo, the fuselage is on the ne side of Naomi at 55s448267e 5357331n and one wing is at 55s447720e 5357055n on the west side of Naomi
I was at the lake in 1978 when a group of 4wd ers were also camped there. They drove a swb landcruiser around the lake to the wreck and spent some time cutting the wing off with axe and hacksaw. They then dragged it beck with the landcruiser and set it up between two trees near the hut. Dick Ried used to fly in in a float plane but it crashed on takeoff .No one was killed but i think someone got a broken leg.The motor and other good bits were taken out by tractor and trailer. The rest is still there.

Where is the turnoff from the Bronte Park to Miena Road to get to Lake Naomi? Just checked the Ina map, it is the Gowan Brae Road, I think?

And how far am I able to drive on this track before it is necessary to begin walking?

Flyfisher, you noted back in August that I would need to come around the southern end of Olive Lagoon to get from to the western side of Lake Olive. Is this because of scrub, or too much water in the river?

Thanks

Robbo, the only reason I said about crossing the Little River at the bottom end of Olive Lagoon is because thats where the 4wd fofd is on the old Lake Naomi track.
It should be possible to cross at the top end of Olive lagoon, which we did once about 25 years ogo. There ia a wider area in the river where it is fairly shallow if the lagoon is low.Good luck with your walk ,it's an interesting area.Years ago there were a lot of fences out there and the remains of some can still be found.
The road to Gowan Brae turns left about 2 kms from Bronte Park and goes out past Pine Tier dam, then over a hill where there is a good outlook on a clear day with features such as W.of J. in view.
You may be able to get a vehicle across the Nive river bridge(after you pass a hut on the right and an old chimney on the left.) If you can the you can go on for a few kays untill you reach the uphill which goes up to Johnsons Lagoon. The old vehicle track is below right (on the flat)and thats an easy walk to Olive Lagoon and Naomi.

Cheers Flyfisher

Thanks Flyfisher

We may being our zigzagging walk from this end rather than from Lake Ada. Its all good, as there are so many options into the area to explore.

We begin our walk on January 5 and are looking forward to seeing another part of the area, planning to end up at Lake St Clair around 10 days later.
