Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Grampians seemed obvious enough but I haven't been to Mt Stapylton, so it was lucky guessing to find other pictures of the unusual rock formation.

Let's head to WA for a bit of a change. This one is a "where am I?", so what am I standing on when I took this shot

Indeed it is Toolbrunup. You're up, eggs

It looked like a terrific mountain when we drove past - quite unusual with its beehive top.

Next one - in NSW (I know - well over 50% now - but it seems most players know NSW)

Thanks eggs, an enviably clear view of it. The last time we visited was a few years ago, and after climbing up there the whole Grand High Tops area was in a whiteout, so it needed a really good imagination to envisage the Breadknife :( .

Another from NSW. What is this location? Bonus point for naming a historical feature here.

Maitland Bay. Can't say what the historical feature is though.

Just did a bit of research. In 1898 (I think) the paddle steamer Maitland was shipwrecked near here, leading to the name of the bay and some other features nearby.

That was quiick! Yes that will do Graham, Maitland Bay on the Central Coast it is. We did an interesting short circuit walk coming down the ridge at the rear. The historical feature is the 1898 shipwreck of the steamer Maitland, after which the bay is named. Some remains can be seen at low tide, we looked for them but really couldn't see much as the tide was still in. A short account of the (quite tragic) story is here:
http://www.abc.net.au/backyard/shipwrecks/nsw/maitland.htm

Anyway your turn Graham...

I have to admit I Googled it all but quickly came up with a good picture and an interesting article about the wreck. I don't get many in the Aussie game so I feel that's okay.
My picture is from Victoria. Name the steps my wife is climbing.

I agree Graham, it's a tool that I often use too. Including my next guess as I haven't been there, is it Gibson Steps off the Great Ocean Rd near the 12 Apostles?

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Yes it is Gibson Steps. I first took our children down them in 1991 and then last year on a return road trip to WA. In that time the landscape had changed with the collapse of one of the Apostles. I think it was in 1990 that London Bridge collapsed.
Your turn John.

Thanks Graham. I've yet to visit that area but was aware that some of the formations had collapsed through natural processes. Reminds me of the changes I've seen in just the past 11 years or so since I took up bushwalking as a pastime.

Where is this in NSW (I can see I need to get around more to the other states outside NSW and TAS). The log in the foreground proved handy as a crossing point to return to camp later in the day:

Grose River somewhere near the Blue Gum Forest, looking towards the north side of the valley

Yes, that's it Tom. Near the original Blue Gum Forest campsite, now well and truly overgrown. Your go.

View looks vaguely familiar. In the Wollemi somewhere above the Colo R?

If it was the Colo, I would probably get you to tell me what pass. But it's not the Colo.
However, it does look quite similar to the view from above Little Pass -

You won't regret it, there's some lovely country up there.
I presume the view is across to Mt Bogong?

Yes, indeedy, a lovely evening following by an equally beautiful morning.

For this one - the solution was to read a label http://bushwalk.com/forum/search.php?author_id=1598&sr=posts
Under the heading "Re: Favourite Tasmanian camp sites [Multiple photo warning]"
But curiously - I can only see this page under your posts. If I go directly to the topic I can't see it?

Yeah, I tried posting a bunch of my favourites in there, but it never showed up in the thread. I have no idea why. Interesting that it can be seen - and now I won't be able to use any of the other shots in there. thanks for letting me know that. ;)
I have tried to research it a bit more on the web though - this is my second attempt to understand the Bogong High Plains

It's an area of true alpine country with a lot of very large sub-alpine inversions (frost hollows). Very simple. Very easy walking too, for the most part.

Could it be Erskine Creek from Pisgah Rock

All those rocks in the river make it look like the Grose somewhere near Kariwoga ridge????

Thanks Tom,

I found this awsome web site by this mad keen bushwalker also called Tom, it has some great trip reports and photos on it, I stumbled on a similar photo to yours on it.

This next one is in NSW, what is this ridge line called.

First clue, not the Main Range.

No guesses yet.

Second clue, the ridge is north of the main range.
