Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Doesn't look quite right, or my memory is failing as usual, but I'll say you're heading for the Wollangambe Crater and looking back towards the Clarence area. Possibly the quarry in the distance?

Right on the money johnw.

We never made it Wollangambe Crater but that is a different story.

Your turn.

The first time we attempted WC had nav problems and became benighted well short of it. 2nd time worked out though. It's easy to lose the pad in a few places.

I missed your post Bluegum Mic while replying to eggs. Yes it is Rainbow Lake. A short walk of about 1.5km in from the Kosciuszko Rd. This was late afternoon/early evening on the day after Boxing Day 2004. It was about 38 degrees in Sydney and there were bushfires raging in some places. We arrived in Jindabyne in the afternoon to dark skies with strong gusty wind/sleet flurries. Decided to drive up into the mountains for a short walk before dinner. By the time we arrived at the track head it was snowing with a reasonable cover on the ground. On the return walk it snowed quite heavily and we were fairly wet and cold by the end. Rainbow Lake was the dammed water supply for the Hotel Kosciusko which burnt down in 1951. Your turn.

Sorry. Been out all afternoon.

Right! Here's one from Victoria. What mountain am I on top of and for a bonus what's the body of water (which should make this nice n easy).

Haven't done this before so hope it works. I also hope this photo is okay for the competition, went rafting down the river a couple of weekends ago.

What historic bridge in Victoria is this?

Great, went from Bruntons Bridge to Cowwarr Weir over a couple of days. They were releasing some environmental flows from the dam so the river had a fair bit more in it than usual.

Rafting sounds great Tsangpo, looks like a nice spot.

Chains on Carlons Head?

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Tue 24 May, 2011 2:09 pm

Yes, Carlon Head (no 's'), but I'll pay it

The chains are known as Mansons Ladders, after John Manson who put the original ones in. They have been replaced at least once since. They are currently in pretty poor nick, as at least three of the rungs have fallen off.

The green patch on the right is Dunphys Camping Area at Green Gully (Carlons Farm). The big valley on the left is Breakfast Creek, with Ironpot Mountain and Ironmonger hill on the major ridge on the right.

You're up, johnw

Thanks Tom. My spelling and grammar is usually better than that , but people often refer to it as "Carlons". And why is one Carlons Farm and the other Carlon Head anyway? It's one spot I've studiously avoided due to the reported exposure , but have visited the other features mentioned.

Name this NSW watercourse and approximate location. Bonus points if you can name the spur on the right or any features in the background.

Getting warm Nuts. It is the Shoalhaven but not Badgerys. I am in that general area but somewhat distant from Badgerys (although a bit closer "as the crow flies").
