Are you looking south to Mt Geikie from the summit of Mt Tyndall?
Haven't been to this range yet so not sure if i'm pin-pointing it 'eggs-actly', to coin a phrase
Fri 28 May, 2010 10:07 am
You're making it tough for me stu
You are correct that I am on Mt Tyndall and that I am looking southish (probably SE) - but that is not Mt Geikie.
I guess you can post next - but you aught to correctly name the 2 major peaks in view - especially with your coined phrase
Curiously - one of them was named after a chefs hat... now how did you want those 'eggs' done?
Fri 28 May, 2010 10:26 am
I guess the one on the right is Whitham Bluff rather than Geikie then?
Are you referring to Frenchmans Cap in the background?
Fri 28 May, 2010 10:32 am
I would have thought that the mt on the right would have to be Mt Sedgwick.
Fri 28 May, 2010 11:00 am
It is always disconcerting when people suggest a place you haven't heard of or can't remember.
So out with the List to discover where Whitham Bluff is - ahh just west of Lake Tyndall.
A slight rise from Mt Tyndall's point of view - but quite prominant when climbing the track to Mt Tyndall.
But I see Bap has correctly named our peak.
You will find this peak and other views in this thread
http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=718But I will still give the nod for Stu as he had the "where am I" correct.
And yes Frenchman's Cap was given its name because it was considered to look like the cap of the French chefs by those who saw it from the ships at sea.

Ok, a fairly easy one next as I probably didn't deserve the last one...
Fri 28 May, 2010 2:41 pm
no one else wants a bite at this one ? - it's not that hard.
You're on the flanks of lake mountain on the way out to Pindars looking east across to La Perouse with everybodys favourite little scrub thrash, Leillateah in the far distance.
Fri 28 May, 2010 2:43 pm
Yeah, I thought it would go quickly?
Over to you Ivan

Hey stu - beautiful shot
Was that taken from the saddle where Chapman suggests this is a rough camp site?
I was trying to work out where it might be - but a bit hard to pick it. I was looking over the edge into the forested side.
Fri 28 May, 2010 4:09 pm
I'd say this is the spot you are referring to - very, very exposed tho.
It's just before you start the steeper ascent then sidle up Pindars
I don't have my full selection of pics here from this trip so can't give you any more descriptive photos.
Approximate location below:
Below is the shot in the other direction...terrible conditions as you can see
Fri 28 May, 2010 4:20 pm
Bisdee......
Fri 28 May, 2010 4:23 pm
Yup, one day mate.
Hopefully in conditions like this...
but maybe not 35+ degrees like it was this day
Fri 28 May, 2010 4:25 pm
Yup! One day... Soon, while we're fit enough.... Yeh that was a killer of a day! 10 hrs walking, I scored 5 pts that day still!
Fri 28 May, 2010 4:52 pm
Yes Stu - I thought it was very exposed too.
I guess I was thinking it might be over the edge - there appeared to be something workable about 20 m down.
But I didn't see any pads.
About the spot ringed - but I guess someone else might be able to comment on this?

The sun south of due west? So that shot was taken somewhere up in the tropics?
Fri 28 May, 2010 8:28 pm
The photo itself was from Mt Wellington and the setting sun was right next to Federation Peak.
Due west from Mt Wellington is the Snowy Range.
According to a calculation using Visio - Federation Peak is SW roughly at an angle of 213.6deg
[Web says sun sets a max of 236 deg from Hobart at the summer max - West is 270 deg.]
- so true SW is 45 deg down from West & the sun would have been setting pretty close to 30 deg down from West.
In winter it sets North of West.
At the equator the variation South/North from west still occurs but to a lesser degree.

sorry about the delay in moving the game along - the collection at work is getting a bit thin so had to wait 'til I got home.
A bit of a change in pace for this one - for me at least
Fri 28 May, 2010 10:20 pm
Ok, your in the dunes of Crescent Bay looking towards standup point.
Fri 28 May, 2010 10:30 pm
Too easy
over to you

The sun sets further and further south of west the further south you go. In Tassie it sets well south of west in summer.

I'm out all day today so if you are confident that you know this one you can post the next picture.

Just a little quiet.
I have not been that far through Trial Harbour to see the start of Ocean Beach - but I have been to Trial Harbour a few times.
Maybe some other time I will have a relaxing stroll down to the river mouth.
Sun 30 May, 2010 11:06 pm
Whereas I used to ride my motorbike down there with a baby sitting in front of me. I've got to take the baby to get his own motorbike license tomorrow! The Little Henty had a big lagoon at its mouth back then.

I would like to wander down the beach one day Rachel. I think there is still a lagoon of sorts at the Little Henty. Yours looks like one from you recent NE trip. Is it Mt horror in the background?
Gerry

So why did Rachel post a pic after Eggs guessed trial harbour??
Anyway, I think she is on East Tower, looking at West.
