Where In NZ am I watching these folks fishing for flounder?
As usual, click to zoom.
Sat 10 Jul, 2021 12:16 pm
Looks like those flounders have floundered

. Again I know nothing relevant to this one, so let's start somewhere.
Some research on NZ flounder fishing suggests around Whangarei might be a good area for it.
Are those islands in the distance? What about Bream Bay? At least that's named after a fish.
Sat 10 Jul, 2021 10:43 pm
I think you could go really fast on this beach.
johnw wrote: Whangarei ..... What about Bream Bay?
Wrong island.
johnw wrote:Are those islands in the distance?
It is indeed an island.

Helps to have seen " the World's Fastest Indian".
This is in the Pacific.

I saw that movie too but it didn't click. It's getting harder to identify new material and OS travel is a very long way off.
You must have enjoyed that trip Brian, Fiji is a very friendly place. Rafting on the upper Navua River...

It was a long lonely wind swept Beach when we were looking over it. Amazing place.
I have a few shots from various places, but need to think about how hard they are to identify. So yes Upper Navua in Fiji.

I found another one for the rail buffs. I just need the name of the river valley.
Bonus points for which state and the name of the train I'm on, USA:

- On the Amtrak "California Zephyr" traversing the Colorado River Valley west of Denver, Colorado USA

Rio Grande?

icefest wrote:Rio Grande?
Not the Rio Grande. I think its headwaters are south-ish from here.
Mon 12 Jul, 2021 12:33 pm
Is that the Colorado River Valley?
If that is correct then one would presume you are on the Colorado Zephyr, in colorado state.
If pressed I would guess you are
approx 1.2km (0.75 freedom units) upriver of Radium Hot Springs - which is just after a little mini-gorge after Gore Canyon.

Yes the Colorado River Valley is correct. I can't be certain of the exact location but yes to Colorado state. Have you rafted the river? We passed several rafting parties.
I can only confirm that we are in a part of the Rockies somewhere west of Denver and east of the Utah border.
Train name is close, actually the California Zephyr. It travels from Chicago to the San Francisco Bay area. We boarded in Denver going through to SF overnight.

It took some hunting, but I found this labelled image online, which together with google maps found what i'm pretty sure was the right bend in the river:

Anyway, my submission;
Keeping it close, NZ.

That's amazing, it's almost exactly the same spot. I took a lot of photos from the train, but reflected glare through glass made many of them next to useless. I only posted that because it was one of the better ones.
The new photo, I'll guess south island. I can see people walking along the top of that ridge line.
Probably wrong but let's start with somewhere in The Remarkables.

On Mt Larkins?

You cant see without higher resolution, but those are signs for ski runs.
johnw wrote:Probably wrong but let's start with somewhere in The Remarkables.
It is. I'm just above lake alta (cropped out of the photo).

Sorry, eggs.

Thanks. I need to get my eyes checked, again. It was just a guess, but had a Queenstown-ish area look. Eggs wasn't too far away.
I'll continue with my rail theme. From another train, USA:

- Bartlett Glacier from Alaska Railroad "Coastal Classic", Chugach National Forest, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska USA

The visibility isn't great but there are a pear of named glaciers at this location, more or less next to each other.
The name of the visible foreground one will do. The other is somewhere behind it, possibly to the left.

It that Bartlett Glacier?

Did the fruit clue help? Yes, Bartlett Glacier viewed from Alaska Railroad "Coastal Classic".
The other one is Deadman Glacier, I shudder to think how it may have acquired that name.
Yours again icefest.

Surprisingly not, I though it was an annoying typo.

My bad.
I'm in NZ again. Bonus points if you can name the place I'm driving down to. (Hint: I brought a torch)

I figured it had to be a clue because you don't make those sorts of spelling errors. But otherwise it was no help at all.

Okupata Caves? (with a guide so you don't get lost?)

Thank you NNW, I think you and I are of the few who still appreciate good spelling and grammar.
I've been known to historically correct my own posts through feeling guilty at having made an error, and a bit of OCD.
I wasn't sure how many would get the "Bartlett" pear clue, but threw it in anyway.
I note from Wikipedia-
The Williams' bon chrétien pear, commonly called the Williams pear, or the Bartlett pear in the
United States and Canada, is the most commonly grown variety of pear in most countries outside Asia.Woolies have their own take on it with
"William Bartlett Pear".

Is it near Waitomo Caves?
PS. Near Waitomo Caves is the Waingaro Hot Springs Hotel. For a giggle have a read through some of the older reviews - a bit like Fawlty Towers.

Yes, No guide though (I've been caving since I was about 6) .

I've only ever heard of it called the Williams Pear (Though usually in German, and in reference to a certain warming drink)

Staying in NZ.

- Archway Islands, Wharariki Beach
