Kanangra to Katoomba

Mon 14 Jan, 2013 11:13 pm

Hi, I'm thinking of doing the K to K sometime this year I've been reading about it but there is one question unawnsered. If you are aloud to have campfires or you have to take a portable stove? Any awnsers thanks.

Fires are permitted just so long as there is not a fire ban.

As long as there isn't a total fire ban in place you are fine to have camp fires. As per any walk, just make sure you use existing fireplaces (or bury / scatter fire remains if there isn't one), don't create stone rings, avoid placing fires on bare rock, and don't burn rubbish (I'm sick of picking little bits of foil out of people's fires!). You will find plenty of firewood along the entire route.
That said, I still like to take a stove as well for walks. It is handy if you want to have a hot lunch / quick breakfast, and really comes into its own if you have a lot of rain. I'd much rather cook under my fly that having to light a fire in the rain!

Except if you use stoves provided by the National Park (gas or electric) - which you won't find on the way.

I agree. I don't know if I'm getting old but on my trip over Christmas i didn't light one fire! And it was fine weather too! Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that I was pretty stuffed each night and as I was staying in a hut it was so much easier just to fire up the choofer?

You would have to be pretty stuipid to light a fire in a National Park when there is a fire ban, anyway all your replies are much appreciated :) Thanks

Yes, although one of the challenges of multi-day bushwalks is that you have no idea of changing weather forecasts and fire ban decisions from the authorities. I know some walkers who take a little transistor radio for this purpose, although most of us just go by common sense as to whether it is safe and sensible to have a fire.
