Watagans suggestions

Mon 12 Aug, 2013 4:24 pm

I'm planning for some day walking in the Watagan NP next week, and I'm just wondering which is the better campsite - Bangalow or Gap Creek? I'll be staying overnight for two nights before I have to head back to Sydney

I plan on having a look at the shorter walks, Gap Creek Falls, Moss walls, some of the lookouts etc and can hopefuly find something that's a bit longer for one of the days, but still doable as a retun trip, as I'll be starting from where I can park a car.
I've read some of the reports regarding the Watagans there on the forums, and the creeks and falls look great.

Suggestions from some locals as to the best place to camp overnight? It doesn't look like I need to book or pay, which is a pleasant surprise

The Heatons to Macleans walk is very nice. As you can't do the car shuffle then it will be nice to walk part way and then turn around. Starting from Heatons has the nicer rainforest section.

The walks at the Basin are good short walks.

That would be my suggestion too. I've done it as a loop many times as it's a great training run from Heaton Gap (approx. 25km). But just between Heaton Lookout and Macleans lookout on the GNW is great, off memory it would be around 15km's ??. The wildwalks notes would have that listed as a Great North Walk section I think as Forest HQ to Heaton Gap (or such). Some nice views and there is a very pretty little waterfall just off the track where it crosses Wallis Creek down in the deep dank rainforest like section. To make a loop I just return to the start via Forest HQ and the Watagan Forest Rd. Kind of boring way to make a loop but it still a loop. You can easily park the car at Hunter or Macleans lookout on one side, or Heaton Lookout on the other side.

Sorry I don't have a suggestion to where would be best to car camp. I try to avoid those spots, especially on weekends as there sometimes are no shortage of hoons and music.

Hey are you up there this Saturday / Sunday ??. I'll be up at The Pines / Old Mill Picnic Area (with about 300 others) in the 12hr Rogaine, The comp runs from Midday to Midnight Saturday.
You could enter the 6 hour event if you had a partner, heaps of fun.
