Snowy Mountains Trip in April

Mon 04 Nov, 2013 11:38 am

Hi all,

The Wife and I are thinking of heading down to the snowies in April next year for a trip. I've camped there once before quite a few years ago in summer. From the N.P.'s website April temperatures seem to be ok still for camping and walking without having to deal with snow?

Last time I think we camped at Ngarigo campsite. Does anyone have any recommendations for other good campsites? We'll be car camping in a pretty big tent and would like toilets. We'll be doing day walks and maybe an overnighter too.

Any advice would be appreciated. ta

Cams,

You have quite a few options depending on the type of walking you are looking at doing.

For starters check out Currango, whilst you can't camp there you can hire a room in the old homestead and do a series of day walks and lets face it , it is always nice to come back to warm showers etc. There are also camp arear's in and around the currango area (northern kosciouszko near Tantangara).

You could also stay at 3 mile dam and do day walks into the Jagungal wilderness area.

Cheers Zac

Hi cams,

I suggest being prepared for snow at any time of the year. There is no month I've not had snow there. Don't panic about it, but do figure on it being a possibility - more likely to be a cold blast.

In addition to Ngarigo, there's also the Thredbo Diggings, just a few k's east of Ngarigo. Another lovely spot, a bit more sheltered than Ngarigo.

West of Dead Horse Gap is a campsite at Tom Groggin.

In the north of the park you could have a look at Four Mile Dam or even Blue Waterholes.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd love to see snow but I don't really like the idea of camping the whole week in it or needing to get snow gear like shoes. Does snow get down to the main campsites in winter like Ngarigo and Thredbo Diggings?

I'll have a look at those other campsites and that homestead. We'll be trying to keep costs down though.

Hmm. Yes and no. It can snow there, but they aren't snowbound by any stretch of the imagination. I guess they are at around 1250-1300m asl. You wouldn't need snowshoes, and it is unlikely to be snowing for a whole week (it seems it's unlikely to snow a whole week in winter sometimes!). I'd just be ready for it to be cold. April will be cool either way. Above 20C would be hot for that time of year at the campsites, and over 15C hot on the main range above Thredbo, etc.

Around the other side is some lovely camping and walking to some old huts along the river at Geehi

Sounds like a great trip. It amazes me how often we get heavy snowfalls on Anzac day and around that time so I would suggest early april vs late (mind you as mentioned it can snow anytime of the year but late April we often get the first real ground cooling dump of the year).

Didn't think this was worth a new thread, so I'll just tack it onto this one.

What's the water supply like in April up there? I'm thinking of doing the main range circuit from Guthega detailed here and I'm hoping for enough water to see me through!

Thanks :D

Usually quite wet.
OK, OK. We have never had any trouble finding water on the tops in KNP, and April should be fine. (Fine for water; can't predict the weather!)

Cheers
