great north walk

Sun 04 May, 2014 9:52 pm

We would like to walk from Yarramalong to Teralba in the next few weeks.
Can anyone comment on reliable water and how many days you think it would take?
Has anyone stayed at the accommodation options?
Thanks

Hi KazB

I walked the Basin to Heaton Gap last week - over three days. Five days for you plan would be good -- possible todo in 4 if in a hurry - but it is a hilly section of the GNW with some over grown sections.

Water tank at the Basin and at Watagan HQ where both empty.
there was water in creeks (needing treating) at The Basin, Wollombi Brook, Watagan Creek (in farm), in the Crawford Tank beside the hut, some very gross looking water in the dam at the 'Saddle Rest area' west of Barrabba, Hunter lookout tank had water, Wallis Creek, Heaton lookout, some gross water in dam beside Heaton Communications tower and then a tap at heaton gap.

Take your time around the gullies through Wallis Creek area - these are overgrown at the moment and the track is not always really obvious.

hope that helps.

Happy walking

Matt :)

Thanks Matt,
Any ideas on transport?

Hey Kaz
There is a school bus from Wyong to Yarramalong. It is a bit of a hassle - doable but probably easier to get a friend to drop you off - or do a car shuffle.
From Teralba it is an easy train ride.
Happy walking

Matt :)

walking GNW from Teralba to Patonga is on my "to do" list, but water seems to be an issue. Where are there (fairly) reliable water tanks ? I scouted out the Archery Range camp site near Yarramalong last week where the tank is no longer operational. Am I best to rely on creeks and purifying ? All this recent rain is making that a better option daily

Plenty of rain water about ATM. I was out there yesterday (And it was hammering down all day) and most of the creeks were flowing.

There is a tank I believe at Crawfords Hut near the Congewai East track head, havn't dropped in there for a while though.

Also there is a brand new little roof shelter with small tank at the top of ridge above Cedar Creek track head where the walking trail hits the firetrail at the very top of the climb (Walkers Rest Area).
That ones really new. ie, last few weeks. Not a large tank though so could be unreliable.

Thanks Forest. I do love those little shelter/ tank arrangements. The one on Convict Road at 10 Mile Hollow is most welcome. A few more along the GNW wouldbe brilliant !! Or fix the tanks that have been vandadlised.

"Fixing" the vandals would be more effective. Ah, if only it was that easy! ;-)
