New GNW Trail Markers

Fri 27 Jun, 2014 10:28 am

Hi All.

I've been hitting the GNW a LOT lately up round the Watagans as I've been accepted in the GNW100 race in September.

There is always a lot of runner debate and anger over unofficial trail marking (pre event), especially in some rainforesty sections like between Heaton and McCleans Lookout the Basin etc.

Recently there have been some newer white on red reflective signs (official looking ones) placed through from Heaton to McCleans Lookout, nailed to trees  . Haven't seen them anywhere else. They are not quite at all the critical junctions hence I'm guessing it was not a runner who has gone to some expense on the signs.

Does anyone know of who might be placing these markers and if they are offical or not.

hi Forest,
Can't offer you any explanation as to the new "markers", but........
congratulations on being accepted into the GNW100s !
3 or 4 marathons in a row, non-stop........tough event on a tough route. I follow the event each year with interest, online at Terrigal Trotters and reading the event's Forum over at Cool Running Australia leading up to the race. I hope you get to rub shoulders with 100 miler champion Brendan Davies along the way. They say he is a very nice, down to earth bloke.

btw, i was up at Heaton Gap last saturday (the 21st), headed north along the GNW up the Gap Trail into the Sugarloaf Range for 5klms and then back to Watagan Forest Petrol Stop. As i drove out leaving, i saw a trail runner wearing a white visor coming out of the Gap Trail running towards the Petrol Stop along Freemans Drive. I thought to myself "uHaaaa ! training for the GNW100s" lol. WAS THAT YOU ?

cheers bud

Hi Rob.
Nah that wasn't me but I'm pretty sure I know who it was. Plenty of us hitting the trails as of late.
Looking forward to the race. Will be a good challenge to say the least. I'm only doing the "soft" 100km option.
Might see you out and about.
BTW I'm NJMS over on CR.

yeah, now that the event has been brought forward to september, the runners are coming out of the woodwork lol. The 100klms to Yarramalong is nothing to sneeze at Forest........finish THAT and you are a winner ! They say each year, the tricky bit of the race is coming into and out of The Basin checkpoint.

edit: i would LOVE to have done something like that in my life.....trail run, cross country ! missed my calling lol. At 60 now and unfit, am happy to just get out and do an exhaustive 10 klm bushwalk.

cheers NJMS and again, congrats.
Rob
