Kanangra to Katoomba

Sat 09 May, 2015 7:30 pm

Hey guys,

Me and a party of about 9 people are planning to do the Kanangra to Katoomba walk some time in July.

We plan to basically follow these track notes, however I have a couple of questions:
  • As we do not have a car, we plan to catch a bus to Jenolan from Katoomba, and walk to Kanangra Walls from there following Jenolan Caves Rd, then onto Kanangra Rd, and walking down the various fire trails to the Walls. Is there much traffic along these roads? Will we be able to walk along these roads without being too annoying to drivers? Is there a camp site near Kanangra Walls? (we fully expect the walk from Jenolan to Kanangra Walls to take about a day).
  • Do you guys have any advice that you would like to share? :)

Cheers,
~ Dan.

It is quite a hike from Jenolan to Kanangra Walls, probably about 34km. The road isn't exactly busy, but you will get passed by plenty of cars given it will be a about a 7 hour walk. The road is generally pretty wide once you are on the Kanangra Rd, but the road up the hill from Jenolan is narrow & windy & I can't say I would be too keen to walk up it . At Kanangra you could camp in Dance Floor Cave for the night, it is only a couple of hundred metres along the track from the start at the Kanangra lookout.

As Turfa said, it's a fair walk to the walls, but if you're able to dedicate a day to covering the distance, I would recommend taking the fire trails where possible for something different. One possibility would be the following:

From the caves, head up the side road which follows Camp Creek towards the worksheds. Towards the end, there is an old overgrown track which you can start you on your way up the hill. If you don't see it, just climb up to the East and get on top of the ridge. Once onto, head south along the ridge, and you will hit the firetrail which goes the Oaky Camp property. Continue south along it to meet up with Kanangra Walls Road.

From here, walk along the side of the road for around 4.5km until you hit the firetrail heading East a 1km past Mt Dunn. From here it is all firetrail to the walls, except for the final 2km along the main road. See the attached 4 overlapping screenshots for my route suggestion.

It's worth checking out the route properly on a topo map, or using http://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/ if you haven't already.

Try http://www.madjestictours.com.au/Whats%20On.html, or otherwise talk to the Katoomba taxi companies. I'm sure you could do better things with an extra day than road bashing.

Also, K2K is mostly wilderness, so party size limit is 8.

We can and do plan to :)

So to get onto the fire trails, you want us to do this (dark yellow line)?

Does the track you mention go all the way, or only part of the way? Have you done it before?

Thanks :)

Would love to, but we're just uni students and money is an issue :(

Here is an alternative way (used by the cool running people) to get from Jenolan Caves to Oaky Camp: http://coolrunning.com.au/fatass/hq/images/a/a3/SBMT_topos_16_m.jpg.

Cheers,
Michael.

Alright. Might do that then. Thanks :-)

Is there anything else/any tips I should know about before going on this walk (which will be next week)? :-)

It'll be really cold.

It will probably be quite windy.

Days are relatively short, don't fluff around in the morning as larger groups can be prone to doing.

It's a lovely part of the world, let us know how you got on.
