Great North Walk Camping, Water and other tips

Tue 08 Sep, 2015 2:28 pm

Hi all

I've just joined this forum so I apologise if this has been asked before, I did do a search. My friend and I are considering doing a section of the Great North Walk in a few weeks time taking approx 2-3 days. My biggest concern is being alone in our tent at night (we're both female) and where to actually set up camp along the way. Can we just pitch a tent anywhere? Also, how to know if we're going in the right direction? And also where to find drinkable water? Also any other tips would be very welcome. Thanks in advance from a first time trekker :D

Starwyn which sections are you cosidering doing. As per the above post wildwalks is a great website to look at the various walks. I have completed the entire walk with 2 other girls and a guy and have never felt unsafe. I also live in the hornsby area and have done many an overnighter locally on the gnw with a female friend no dramas.

If you do the Heaton gap to Teralba section, consider a Toronto hire car or a Newcastle taxi from Wakefield to Teralba. There are part with big trucks and parts with no shoulder and lots of fast cars and it's boring road bashing

Hi
I thought I'd be notified when I received replies, I swear I ticked the box. Anyway, thank you :)
Am looking at starting reasonably close to home so probably start from Cowan and head towards home (bateau bay but originally from Penrith)
What about water? Shoes? The right bag to hold everything plus sleeping bag and mat? So much to consider!

While there is some informal campsites in kuringai i believe your not 'supposed' to camp there, and anyway theres a fair bit of foot traffic so i personally wouldnt.
However from Patonga through to Somersby there are.plenty of 'legal' campsites along the walk. Might be more further north but i have no experience there sorry
