Mt Exmouth & Bluff Mtn (Warrumbungle NP) - which is higher?

Wed 21 Oct, 2015 10:01 pm

In Warrumbungle National Park, which mountain is higher - Mt Exmouth or Bluff Mountain?

Officially, Mt Exmouth is the highest in Warrumbungle NP:
Mt Exmouth - 1206 m
Bluff Mountain - 1200 m

My Garmin GPS says Bluff Mountain is higher:
Mt Exmouth - 1187 m
Bluff Mountain - 1197 m

My friend's Garmin GPS (different model) also says Bluff Mountain is higher:
Mt Exmouth - 1181 m
Bluff Mountain - 1189 m

In Google Earth, Bluff Mountain is higher too. If I hover the mouse over the mountains:
Mt Exmouth - 1166 m
Bluff Mountain - 1184 m

I would have a lot more faith in the official figures, although they do get it wrong sometimes. Twentieth century surveying techniques should be able to get the height differences correct for two hills that close together.

GPS height figures are only accurate to about 5-15m but can be worse depending on the GPS. Also they will change with the configuration of the satellites. Sitting there for a longer time will give a better results. You should try it with a very well surveyed mountain like Kosciusko.
