Ideas for day walks in Sydney region

Thu 28 Dec, 2017 10:56 am

Hello,

I came across this site and thought I'd ask for some ideas on some half to full day walks I could do in or around the greater Sydney region, particularly over summer when I have a bit more time to do some walking than I can normally do.

I have done many of the "popular" day bushwalks in the Greater Sydney area and when I decide I'd like to go out for a day walking I often get stuck for ideas, even after reading sites like Wildwalks, etc. I'm probably after something that is off the tourist trail but not too remote. I often walk by myself. I am happy to drive an hour or two to get to a walk (I have a 2WD). I like photography so something scenic is always good.

To give you some things I've already done for comparison - I have done the major walks at Wentworth Falls, Mt Solitary, Narrow Neck, Perry's Lookdown, Govett's Leap, quite a few of the Kurringai National Park walks between Hornsby and Brooklyn, I've done most of the Coast Track in the RNP, I've also done some less known walks like the tracks at Mountain Lagoon in Wollemi National Park.

Thanks in advance!

My site has a number of walks that are probably not on Wildwalks - particularly around Wollemi. http://bushwalkingnsw.com/walk_list_park.php
Note that some of the 2 day walks can be done in 1 day (but grade will be harder)

Dave Noble has a list of some day walks in the Sydney region

The NPA has some guides books (may now only be available as eBooks?) - http://bushwalk.com/store/catalog/produ ... ucts_id/66

I also have my bushwalking log book on my website - http://ozultimate.com/tom/bushwalking/log_book.htm - which has the walks and usually enough details on the route to roughly reconstruct the walk. This may be a useful source of ideas. It''s filterable/searchable.

If you're after half day walks, every town in the Blue Mountains has at least one track network on the northern or southern side of the railway / highway. Some have networks on both sides. Google ' nameoftown bushwalks '. Better still if you can beg, borrow or steal Jim Smith's out of print How To See The Blue Mountains 2nd or 3rd Ed. Some of these walks can be linked together to make longer walks. Use of trains can be handy in this regard.

You can add the Barrenjoey Lighthouse, the coastal walk south of Kiama and the Bidjigal Reserve to the list

If you don't mind a drive then I highly recommend the Nattai. Easy access to some great scenic walks from the Wattle Ridge entrance. A number of the walking tracks in the Wattle Ridge area are on Open Street Maps: https://osm.org/go/uN2vwM3?m=
