Great North Walk information

Heya was hoping someone could provide me with some 'mileage' points for the Great North Walk. I have seen the set of 6 maps but they are fairly vague in many places and I'm more interested in knowing the distances between landmarks. Is there anyone out there who has hiked the trail and made a data book? For example if I wanted to take a train out of Sydney on a friday, and hike 60 kms back to Sydney, I would have to go map by map adding everything up, just seems silly. Having a cumulative distance guide (note: not sections) of key areas (roads, campsites, water, mountains, etc) is alot more useful for a long distance hiker.

If there is anyone out there who has a more comprehensive list of distances than the maps, or has thru-hiked the trail in recent years, please get in touch with me. Also, any information on resupply/motels along the way would be great too.

Finally, if you were to cut off the 'urban' sections at the start and end of the trail...what would the total distance be?

I might have what you are after. We walked the GNW again at the end of last year to update our notes, these distances are since then. You can find info about re-supply options in an earlier post I made with a similar list to this (unfortunately I have done them as two separate lists and don't have time to co-late them right now).

You may notice that the route is a little different to what is on the 6 maps you have, but these are following the GNW as signposted on the ground. These distances also include the two ferry trips (Sydney 4.8km and Brooklyn 8.3km).

Cutting out 'urban' section is a tough question. What is urban to one is wilderness to another, but hopefully you will get a sense of that from this table.

Hi Jim,
Glad the info was helpful. It is an enjoyable walk, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the small pockets of bushland especially at the Sydney end.
Take advantage of the Public transport, shops and accommodation options, this can help keep your pack weight down. Pretty good for ultra-light walking. As always keep your pack as light as possible. For example I planned for a meal stop and re-supply at Somersby store and Yarramalong, they are close, but the light pack was great.
The Watagans section is light on water, you could drop a water cache, there is often water in Rocky Creek north of Watagan HQ campsite.
Timing the ferry between Brooklyn and Patonga can be a pain (or an expensive water taxi), you can catch the train between Wondabyne and Brooklyn, then walk the Wondaybyne-Patonga stretch another time (a nice walk - a great day tip).
I really appreciated an ice cream at Berowra Waters and Warners bay - yum
Follow the signs, the track is generally well signposted. The 6 maps are handy, but as with all maps they do not always match the ground.

That is the first stuff that jumps to mind, let me know if you have any specific questions.
(BTW I am writing a guide book for the GNW - hopefully out by winter)

Not starting a new thread and continue to tag onto this existing GNW thread.

Chased some tracks that I have not walked before and wondered what people know of a short section of the GNW just south of Epping Rd and to the West of Lane Cove River? I tried to access the north side of Epping Rd from Magdala Rd in North Ryde but could not find the path that's shown on OSM (see URL below). The missing section is the one that veers NE and looked to loop under Epping Rd to the NW of Lane Cove River. The only thing we could find were metal posts and plastic sheeting that lined what looked to be an overgrown path, effectively stopping all from venturing further. Has the NP people closed this approach?

No from Magdala the route goes across the river on the pedestrian bridge next to the pipeline and above the starch factory. This leads out to the Epping Rd bike lane. From here turn left and recross the river on the Epping
Rd bridge. Then take the steps down on the western end. these lead back under the bridge across to the northern side. Here the track leads into the bush. It follows the river past the old Fairyland pinic site ( amazing how that has grown over. I remember attending a Sunday School picnic there in the '60's) Eventually it comes out on River ave.

Thanks Kanangra. We spent 15min poking into the bush trying to pick up any evidence of said track and failed. With your confirmation, I'll go ahead and delete the present day non-existent section on OSM.
