Suggestions for hike with kids, 2/3-day with swims

Fri 19 Aug, 2011 12:28 pm

Hi all, my 10 yr old boy and 11 yr old girl did the Milford track earlier this year. Now I want to take them out on weekend trips in NSW/ACT, and longer hikes in the holidays, where we can hike, camp and maybe even have a swim. They can cover some Km's, no problem.

Any suggestions please? Thank you! BHB

Bob Turner's Track to the Colo River. Camp at the bottom of an easy 3 hr? walk and explore the river up and down stream. Treat the water even though it looks beautiful and it gorgeous to swim in esp in summer.

Thanks Juju, that sounds great! The kids will love getting out with their back packs again ;-)

Any other ideas for hikes with kids anybody? Thanks, Ben

We're going to the Castle (Budawangs) in September. No swimming but some fun climbing for them.

Echo juju's suggestion. Bob Turners (http://ozultimate.com/bushwalking/walk.php?nid=239) is good, though it's only a little over an hour's walk in. I used to treat the water from the Colo but don't tend to bother any more. There are farms in the upper catchment (Wolgan & Capertee valleys) but the water is sand filtered for 40km.

The Colo has a few other easyish access points, though the walks in and out are a bit longer: Canoe Creek (http://ozultimate.com/bushwalking/walk.php?nid=212), Colo Meroo (http://ozultimate.com/bushwalking/walk.php?nid=790) and Tootie Creek. All good camping spots.

Other spots with good camping near water include the Duck Hole at Glenbrook (no specific notes, but it's along the Glenbrook to Springwood walk - http://ozultimate.com/bushwalking/walk.php?nid=728) and the Coxs River crossing on the Six Foot Track (http://ozultimate.com/bushwalking/walk.php?nid=796)

You could try Bungonia Gorge in NSW. I did some hiking there when I was a kid for the Duke of Ed program. Looking at the Bungonia NP website, I think we went down the White track, followed the Shoalhaven River, then camped. The next day we just continued up the river before hiking back up to the carpark. I'm pretty sure our walk out was off-track. It's a great little walk with plenty of time for swimming and cliff jumping! Check out the NP website if you're interested.

Second the Bungonia suggestion. I've been going down there for years. Some of the campsites next to the Shoalhaven are as good as you will get. Either access the gorge via the Red or White tracks from the Bungonia State Recreation Area carpark (accessed through Bungonia) or alternatively access the gorge via the lookout at the end of Long Gully Road in Tallong. If you want to check out the boulder choke in the gorge the red track is your best option. If you want the most direct route to a great campsite next to the Shoalhaven I would take the Tallong option.

Hi

We did lockley pylon to blackheath last year and it was great. A but tough (we carried too much water) but totally worth doing, with places to swim, waterfalls and views. The only problem is that you need two cars. Otherwise the walk gets too long for 2 days with kids.

I have a video of our adventure if you want to see the walk here:

An full description of the walk:
