Wilf Hilder memorial - plus a detour down Walls Pass

Tue 06 Sep, 2011 10:42 pm

G'day all,
I see there was already a post re the memorial service for Wilf Hilder. I was one of a large group who made their way out to Clear Hill on Sunday.
Despite never meeting Wilf, which I greatly regret, I've long felt a close association with him thanks to some of the passes and tracks he was instrumental in finding / rediscovering / reopening like Walls Pass and Lindeman Pass.
A few of us decided that as a tribute to Wilf we'd make sure we did a bit of exploration of our own, searching out a few of the great camp caves on Narrowneck, as well as an impromptu finish down Walls Pass, which is probably his most famous find.
Most exciting of all was Wilf's challenge from the grave. Supposedly there is a secret pass in the vicinity of Clear Hill that Wilf took with him to the grave. Surely that is enough to inspire a few walkers to do some exploritory pass finding. I know I'm going to try and have a look!
For anyone who is interested, I wrote up a trip report covering the memorial, a bit on Wilf's background, and also some details of our exploration before and after. I hope it is of interest.

Yeah what an inspiration that fellow was. I would have loved to have come along but was still in Canada when I heard the plans for the gathering. Nice report . Thanks for that.

Thanks for that guys. I was keen to write something up because I figured there'd be plenty of people who'd be keen to take part but who were unable to (either due to distance, timing or age). Wilf's death has really inspired me to make sure I meet / bushwalk with a few more of the people who have inspired me.

Ah, but a shame you couldn't join us all at the Carrington to toast the old bugger... just once or twice :-)
