Public Transportation

Postby fourcs » Wed 10 Oct, 2012 5:13 pm

Does anyone know how one can use public transportation (bus, train, plane) to get to Thredbo, Mt Kosciuszko for a walk/camp expedition around 20 Dec, 2012 for two weeks? I'd like not to rent a car. Are any hiking clubs planning trips there at this time? I'm coming from Brisbane.

There isn't any summer public transport to Thredbo that I know of. The best you can do is get to Cooma - fly to Canberra then bus to Cooma - and then hitch.

Its a punish. You can get country link to Cooma, then the school bus from Cooma to Jindy. If you make it that far, ill give you a lift up to Thredbo for a six pack :)

School term formally finishes on Friday 21 December but the last 2 days may be pupil free for "school development" so the school bus won't be running if there are no kids. You need to check with the school bus provider or be prepared to hitchhike. There is no CountryLInk bus to Jindabyne - the route from Canberra goes to Cooma, Bombala and on the Eden.

I have used public transportation to Marulan or to Moss Vale, then hitchhiked via the Hume, then Federal Highway, then take Majura Rd turnoff, then go past the airport and following the signs to Cooma and Jindabyne. Not expecting many will follow in my footsteps, pardon the pun, but I do hitchhike extensively. Often I've met other walkers and skiers, especially when I'm going well equipped and have backpack too. Road transport is faster than rail.

There are tracks that will get you all the way up and back.

The other option would be to get to Albury, take the bus up the Murray Valley to Khancoban, and then walk into KNP from there. (Not sure if that fits with your plans?)
