Great North Walk access.

Postby Rodge » Wed 20 Feb, 2013 8:58 pm

Hi all. We are planning the next section of our GNW - actually a G South W as we started in Newcastle. Our next section takes us from Congewai Valley to Flat Rock Lookout in the Watagans. For those familar with this walk, is there vehicle access to Flat Rock Lookout? If so, how do we get there? Many thanks.

Hi Rodge

Sure can - a bit of a rough road in places - but passable in a 2wd in dry weather.

Great North Walk book wrote:The drive to Flat Rock is along remote dirt forest roads. Turn off Wollombi Rd on to Hayes Rd at Millfield. Drive along Hayes Rd for 5.2km (staying right at 2km point), then continue straight along Trig Rd. After another 5km the road bends left and becomes Cabans Rd, where you drive for another 2.5km, to pass the Communications tower, (waypoint 2). Veer left (still on Cabans Rd) for another 3km, then turn left and follow Langans Rd for 800m to find the signposted Flat Rock lookout on your left. (There is also a campsite 350m further along the road, see walk 22 waypoint 6.)

Enjoy - a few big hills but nice walking.

Matt :)

Thanks Matt. Most helpful - exactly the info I needed. I thought this may be the way in but wasn't sure if the track was negotiable or even locked off. Thanks again. Rodger

State Forests have a map of the Central Coast forests which should give the necessary information.
