Cathedral Rock National Park

Hi all,

Was looking at some pictures of Cathedral Rock and it looks like a lot of fun!

Could anyone recommend other similar hikes in NSW where majority of the hike involves rock scrambles not just towards the end?

There is a lot of granite around Tenterfield. For example Bald Rock:

Closer to Cathedral Rock NP are the Ebor Falls. You can scramble down to the base of both falls (off the track between lookouts), or abseil off the rocks. It is a little cold for swimming, but if you like trout, they congregate at the pools at the base of the falls making fishing easy. Unfortunately they taste of Basalt, but you can hide this with smoke and lemon.

Abseiling is out of my league but is the scramble down a hand and feet type of scramble?

Hi sanbot,

lots of good rock scrambling to be had in Girraween National Park, which is right next door to Bald Rock that maddog mentioned. Also, just further north from Cathedral Rock is Gibraltar Range National Park which has plenty of nice granite outcrops, in particular Dandhara Crags. However these are mainly track walks with the rocks and scramble at the end, but there are plenty of off track possibilities too (Coonama Peak, Old Mans Hat, Haystack, Waratah Trig).

However, we would really recommend some of the western national parks for great, extended rock scrambling along rivers and rocky outcrops/ridges, in particular look at Kwiambal National Park (along the Severn and McIntyre Rivers), Warrumbungles (of course), Mt Kaputar National Park (in particular Mt Yulladunida area and out to Camel's Hump - off track combo of bushwalk and rocky sections).

I caught myself drooling looking at pictures of some of them especially the Pyramid track in Girraween. Reminded me of half dome in Yosemite. I wish these weren't so far from me though But will definately make time to get out there.

The Yulludunida walking track looks good too. For a brief moment when I saw a picture from it I thought of the scenery from the Apache trail in Arizona because I thought I saw cactus. Can someone tell me what is the tall plant in the fifth picture?
