Kosciuszko NP in Sept/Oct

Postby mountnman » Fri 17 Jan, 2014 5:27 am

I'm planning to go to KNP this year, most likely in the Sept/Oct school holidays, and I was wondering if anyone has had first hand experience there during those months. I've walked the main range track in Summer and Autumn, but this time I want to go further up, to Jagungal (from the main range, so Twynam, Tate, and up from there). I would like to know how much snow is still around the peaks, and whether snowshoes would be needed, and what sort of general conditions I would encounter.
Research has shown that men usually sleep on the right side of the bed.

I did a 5 day walk in the Jagungal area last October: encountered no snow, on main range there were still large drifts but they could probably have been walked around/over without snow shoes. Last season's snow was pretty poor, though.

Depending on the winter weather, there's a reasonably high chance of finding snow. Snow-shoes and instep crampons are advised; I've seen huge slopes of sheet ice that barred progress. Sheet! XC skiers are still there in most Septembers. I've skied on the Main Range and Jagungal at that time. The weather may be good. If the weather gets bad you may not be able to move.

I was afraid of that! I'll post another thread in equipment regarding shoes and snow equipment, but feel free to keep posting about your experiences in the Snowy Mountains in spring.

I did the Munyang/Disappointment/Gungartan/Dicky Coopers/Tate/Anton/Twynam/Carruthers/Northcote/Kosciuszko/Snowy River/Hedley/Guthega loop in 4 days the year before last; had everything from a miniature blizzard to clear skies and hot sunshine - and deep snowdrifts almost all the way until Illawong. It all depends on the amount of winter snow and the early spring weather.
Personally, I wouldn't head in there at that time of the year without being prepared for snow and bad weather.
