Yengo NP suggestions June long w/e 2014

Postby Onestepmore » Sat 08 Feb, 2014 5:55 pm

Anyone had personal experience with Yengo National Park?
We're doing a bit of research about where to stay for some walking over the June long weekend. Mogo campsite looks nice, has composting loos, we can pre book a site, have a campfire etc. Looks to be a few walks around, keen to do a bit of the Great Northern Road.

Comments or alternative suggestions anyone?

If base camping we'd take our trailer and Oztent RV 5 and the OzPig etc.
We can learn a lot from crayons. They come in different shapes and colours, but they all have to live in the same box

Mogo Creek is a nice spot. There is really only one track walk and that is down the Old Great North Road. Heading down as far as Mt Lockyer makes a nice day. Mt Locker is slightly off to the west, but is an easy off-track walk from the road. From memory the best views are from a rock platform which is before the high point.

An alternative if you have a 4wd is Big Yengo. From there you can walk around Mt Yengo, or if you like rocks and weeds to the top.

Thanks, I'll have a look.
We don't have a 'proper' 4WD, I have the ladies version, a Kluger, so may not be possible

I don't think the track to Blue Gums campsite is very difficult 4wd. Most of the way in is 2wd. They have a 4wd track from there that follows a 22km loop. I haven't been there since they constructed it, but I expect it follows the existing 4wd tracks around Mt Yengo, and would be a nice walk if the 4wd haven't made too much of a mess. As there is a locked gate the NPWS should be able to tell you the likely number of vehicles there for the long weekend. If you want to climb Yengo, the NPWS may be able to help you, but I think it is just heading upwards from the closest 4wd track, through lots of rocks. They have a shorter loop track.

Another idea for a day walk if camping at Mogo Creek, is to drive to the start of the Boree Track and then walk to Burragurra and return.

There is a track goes off from the back of the camping area and does a loop to the Circuit Flat bridge via a number of quarries used by the builders of the GNR in the early 1800s. The quarries are not very obvious, but if you know what you are looking for, they are easy enough to find by exploring off the track.

There is also the Mount Manning aboriginal site not too far away.

Over the other side of the Mogo Creek Road is virgin bush, mostly. Go up the hill a bit on the road and follow the ridge and spur west to come out near the junction of two creeks (Kulnura map). Note that the track one km north is private property. The west branch is quite nice to walk up. Look for the ancient lemon tree. May need the Murray's Run map.

Speaking of which, if you go back to the intersection with George Downes Drive, you will see a nice creek headwater around 256354. It is a pleasant wander downstream to 230345, then climb the spur to the fire trail and return to the car. Navigation can be a challenge, so as to know when to climb out.

This is quite deep and dark, with its fair share of leeches. With the drought, the creek may be a bit dry now. Probably not something to take young kids into.

Have fun.
