Numantia Falls - an alternate route

Postby Webguy » Sun 06 Apr, 2014 5:53 pm

I had heard there was an alternate route to Numantia Falls from the end of the 4WD track that starts as Binstead St at Faulconbridge.

Took the wife today, found the start of a feint track, was looking good, it was heading straight for where I wanted to go, we lost that track after 80mtrs or so and could find no track of it again.

This was on the left just as the 4WD track turns right and does a big circle and comes back on itself. Maybe there is a track off that circle, I did not look.

So, is there a track down from there?

We ended up bashing down and it was tough! Real tough!

On the way back out, using the Victory track, we came across a newish, well defined track that only looks a few months old heading up onto the ridge that has Badham st on it. This track is between 6-12 feet wide and marked with pink tape, who the hell cuts these tracks in? It's the second I have found just like this in recent months.

A couple of pics if you can see them...

Maybe this was what started it: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=16320

Did you take any photos of the track? I'd be interested in seeing it.

Quoting myself from here a few years ago; "I vaguely remember from 20 years back a suggestion that Martin may have had a tourist track cut to the top and bottom of the falls." Possibly a remark by Jim Smith. Logically such a track would have come down the Binstead St ridge. On my one visit to the falls, I seem to recall stumbling on a benched track bypassing the falls on the eastern side. As the pad up Numantia Ck was apparently never a proper tourist track, it would be seem reasonable for the benched track to be connected to the Binstead end. I returned back down the western side of the falls, so never had much of a look for a track up the ridge.

It is near the top of the things to look for when my knee (hopefully) improves following a recent operation.

Grabeach, when your knee improves, and we have a matching weekend, let me know, I'd go back and look again, but would look for a track in the turn around circle, not try and follow what I started on today. We also came across a couple of old wooden fenceposts with barbed wire in them.

Kanangra, thanks, it's my fav of the day as well.

Great photos Webguy. Looks like a beautiful waterfall. I also love the 2nd shot. The ferns and moss growing on the rock 'roof' make it look even more amazing.

I was shown a nice walk once. From the falls we continued up above and then climbed out of the creek to the left and came upon a rock garden. From here we descended a nice sharp ridge that brought us back out at the junction of Sassafras Ck and the gullu of the same name.

Kanangra, was that a defined path or just a scrub bash walk you did? And by rock garden, what do you mean? Something someone made or something natural?

Thanks.

It really looks like a decent track. We should get the person who made it to redo the north west spur up feathertop. :p

We just made our way through the bush but there was the odd tape mark. By rock garden I meant a natural feature with open rock slabs, moss and lichen with the odd boulder or two. Very pretty.
