Water at Mt Dawson Cave

Postby melinda » Sat 21 Jun, 2014 7:41 pm

Has any one been out to Mt Dawson cave in the last few weeks?
If so, is there water in the creek below the cave?
Cheers, Melinda :)

No water below cave, no water at normal pick up point on way in this weekend!

Did you go down into the little canyon that runs north from Mt Dawson? It can be done without ropes (but needs some pack passing) and there's some reasonably deep rock pools in there. I'd be very surprised if it was dry.

It's been dry the last couple of times I've been there. Luckily it rained both times...

Hi Tim and Tom,
We went every where looking for water.
I found a small soak beneath an undercut rock near one of the little drops in the creek below the cave. About 100ms(?) down the creek.
We got about 8 litres of water out of it. One of the guys went back there the next morning and it was full again! :D
We normally pick up water on way in. You have to go off the track and down. No water.
I believe this is part of the small north running canyon that you are talking about, Tim.
In fact, one of the guys went all the way up the creek from there. Nothing apart from the undercut rock I mentioned.
One of the others found water closer to Mt Dawson itself, in a small creek, but I don't have coordinates for it.
The funny thing is, one of my mates lives in Lawson :D , and he told me there had been quite a bit of rain in the mountains in the week prior to this trip!
But not at Mt Dawson!
