Down on the Dewy

Postby kanangra » Fri 26 Sep, 2014 12:18 pm

I have just returned from a couple of days in the Deua Valley ( the Dewy to locals.) I went in from the Wyanbene Cave campsite down to the old property at Alpine. I then walked up valley to Canoolie. From there I located the old bridle trail through to Bendethera where I camped. Next day I visited the cave before scrambling straight up to the top of the Minuma Range. Here I picked up a fire trail which led back to Wyanbene Mt and the car.

An excellent trip. The Deua must be the purest river in the State. Beautiful. Just like the Kowmung used to be. I will post a trip report and a few pics when I get a chance.

Look forward to that report, k. I've been to bendethera in a car but done no walking in the area. I think I remember reading somewhere that the whole area was a Aboriginal exile land, sort of a place for the damned....eerie country.

I hadn't heard that one. It was definitely where bushrangers used to hide out. The notorious Clarke gang were related to the Georges by marriage and so it was thought they were being harboured by the Georges of Bendethera. Both Clarke brothers were caught and hanged in the 1870's. The younger was only 21.
