kanangra to katoomba

hi
planning to do kanangra to katoomba for first time just after new year.
I figure with a bit of rain recently that water at dexs creek and mobbs swamp will be fine, but just thought I’d check if anyone has been out recently and can advise?

Dexs Creek is tiny, and up there the rivers rise only if there's lots of rain but when that happens you'd only be stuck for a half a day waiting til it goes down again. Coxs River is a major crossing but normally only knee deep. Bring crocs and use them for the crossing. All camps have no facilities. It's an excellent walk and highly recommended. There is a decent scramble descent of 10 metres on day 1, but not dangerous and ok for experienced and fit walkers.

Hi Mark64,

Both Dex Creek and Mobbs Soak usually hold some water, but at times they are just reduced to pools that look a little gunky. If they are like that, I recommend filtering or purifying before drinking.

The Coxs river is definitely polluted so it's a good idea to avoid it if possible. Kanangra Creek where it meets the Coxs is a good place to fill up and you can drink straight from it. Sometimes when water levels are low, Kanangra Creek flows underground near the junction, but a short walk upstream should lead you to flowing water.

Did this walk in mid November, did it over 4 days(getting on a bit), fantastic walk.
Getting off the Kanangra plateau took a bit of stuffing around before finding the correct gully in thick mist, there are cairns showing the wrong way, look for arrows painted on the path pointing left towards a crack in the rock.
Water was a bit of a problem, Dex Creek was down to a trickle, Mobbs Swamp was bone dry. We found water and camped at a dam called Lake Birrel, 300m to the right, then 200m to the right again from Medlow Gap. Water was deep brown from tannin, we filtered and treated it and had no problems. Doing it over 4 days meant a short second day, but Kanangaroo Clearing is such a delightful campsite that it is worth sacrificing speed for if you have a day up your sleeve.
