ANZAC day dawn service - Splendour Rock

Postby Marwood » Fri 15 Apr, 2011 2:59 pm

Thinking about heading to Splendour Rock for the ANZAC Day dawn service, since our planned Easter Kozzy trip has had to be cancelled due to my knee problems. Is the campsite at Mobbs Swamp/Soak likely to be crowded out the night before?
Come on lads, let's get home. The sky's beginning to bruise, night must fall, and we shall be forced to camp.

It's a pretty big camp site! (So unlikely to be too crowded.)

The only problem with camping at Mobbs in this instance is that you've still got a ~2km walk up to Splendour Rock, which would need to be done in the dark to be on time for the dawn service. I haven't attended but think I've read that some camp nearby on Mt Dingo itself. There are a couple of spots up there but I'm guessing it may get crowded. If going from Mobbs take good head torches and make sure you don't miss the turnoff.

Thanks for the info. Since we haven't been up there before, we think we'll probably go to Mobbs Swamp on Saturday, and recce up to Mt Dingo on Sunday. If it looks good we'll stay there Sunday night, or go back to Mobbs Swamp otherwise. May be weather dependent, as I'm guessing the area at Mobbs is more sheltered. 10-day forecast for easter is looking OK, which'll be good because the weather today in Sydney sucks. :( :( :(

Arghh :x ,tell me about it. That's the only reason I'm on here at present. Yes, Mobbs is quite sheltered. There's actually a large cave just below the campsite. I don't know whether it's generally used for camping but looks suitable if need be.

The cave is fine for camping in....it can be a little gloomy down there in the gully next to the creek, but it is real nice to be dry when it is pouring with rain outside !

Yes, I couldn't help thinking that when we were there. I should have a photo of it somewhere.

I've been going up to Splendour Rock for 6 years, you can usually find a spot on top of Mount Dingo, Mobs Swap is often used by local Scout groups and get a bit busy. Either way its an amazing service and now my 14 year old lad comes with me its even better.
Weather wise, it can get very cold this time of year, and for the last 6 years it has rained at some point during the day and night.
