Proposed lease of Katoomba Airfield

The NSW Department of Industry is considering a proposal to lease Crown land at Medlow Bath known as Katoomba Airfield. The existing lease has come to an end and the new lease applicant is proposing to use the site for recreational aviation.

There is a lot of concern about the impact of a resumption of recreational aviation on the surrounding world heritage area in relation to issues such as noise, visual intrusion, wildlife and general serenity of 'the bush'. The preferred position is for the airfield site to be added to Blue Mountains National Park and for use of the airfield to be restricted to firefighting and emergency uses.
