Great North Walk - Watagan Forest Motel Closed?

Postby teambob » Sat 04 Jan, 2025 10:45 pm

Hi,

Planning to do a through-ish hike of the GNW in around April.

However the Watagan Forest Motel is listed as permanently closed by Google. Ampol Brunkerville is listed as open. However both phone numbers were disconnected when I called.

Anyone know what is going on? Or good alternative accommodation? Maybe just camp on the Brunkerville trail?

Ring the Service Station? They might know.
If you are going to camp its better to stop up the hill from Heatons Picnic Area before descending to Heatons Gap

I wouldn't sleep at the Watagans Forest Motel (or nearby). Seems like it is mostly used for semi permanent accommodation and might not be a quiet night sleep.

That said I have heard from others it is ok to camp out on the grass outside the motel, and there is water tap available plus treats from the servo.

There are a few campsites on the way down to Heaton Gap, about 500 metres down from the Telecom tower). Refer to "Lookout Point" on google maps (GPS -32.96769, 151.46915). Flat spots with a great view.
