Kosciuszko in Winter

Postby spike » Wed 02 Jul, 2025 4:10 pm

Hello all!

I've got 5 and a half days off in mid July and am very keen to get to Mt Kosciuszko or the surrounds. Driving out of Melbourne, so probably 3.5 days/ 3 nights max on the trail say.

Would love any advice on a route! Early planning phase. I've got some maps and starting to plan now. Access as well, whats the best way to drive up there with winter roads? I've got a 4wd but would rather take the 2wd to save some fuel...

We've got a fair few nights of winter and snow camping experience behind us, off track navigation skills, ice axe, micro spikes, snow shoes, 4 season gear, could access some alpineering boots and crampons if needed. Have some basic avalanche training too.

Thank you kindly for your advice on where to start looking!

Any book recommendations on this area in winter would be awesome too.
