A question for the post COVID world but does anybody know what the bush is like around Yerranderie after the bushfires earlier this year?

Also, aside from the climb up to Yerranderie Peak and a wander around the mines are there any other interesting day walks in that area?

Never been but was supposed to be there now for a 5 day walk

Edit, checking out the location via Google maps and my recollection of watching the fire maps, it got burnt pretty well, but sometimes one side of a ridge was burnt and not the other.
Look forward to some local knowledge too.

If you are happy to go off track, and travel a few kms, there is so much to see around there.

Not many other daywalks in the area that I know of.... maybe Axehead from Byrnes Gap, Mt Colong maybe, could also do Kowmung and back via inglis selection or Bulga cone (or both and make it a circuit). All involve a fair bit of fire trail. Also Tonali mountain or mootik walls maybe... need to be good with nav and probably best to defer to others with more off track experience in the area. Whole area got burnt I think (town was saved) but walking will be ok later in the year when restrictions lift. Is strangely nice after a few months of regeneration.

+1 for what Clarence said. If you have a map, compass, and adventurous spirit there is no limit to the exploration around there. I'd also recommend a handline and some scrambling experience as well, to help with passfinding. Beautiful country with some stunning views.

Only been to Yerranderie once for a couple of days by vehicle.

The area does have plenty to see, a walk around the mines, the walk up the peak, and a trip to the cemetery are all interesting. My brother and I where the only people there on a Sunday night and it was amazingly quiet.

Yerranderie is in the SE corner of Dunphys Kowmung map. The Dunphy map has some walk routes on it to the NW of Yerranderie. If you can find a copy it may be useful.

We came off a full traverse of the Axeheads down to Byrnes Gap some years ago. It was very emphatically NOT the hardest part of the trip!

Could a trip into the Kowmung be done in a day from Yerranderie?

You could get TO the Kowmung in a day, no problem. A day return - hum ... a few hundreds of metres altitude into the valley.
But then, once you hit the road on the way back you could headlight home easily enough. It would help to know the area.

Yep, like they all said...Heaps to see and do there. I must be easier pleased than Clarence and Co. because I’m happy out there just to trundle along the many Ft’s and old farm roads of the area. The place is a like a living, breathing natural museum.

Head up one of the major creeks in the vicinity and you’ll see some stuff that will knock your socks off!,

Any ideas what the Colong Stock Route is currently like? The forecast for Friday/Saturday is rain, will that prohibit a small SUV from getting in/out?

I saw the other day that yerranderie had reopened but the OSR was still closed beyond Mt Werong?

It's been a few years since I've driven it, but it can be really hit and miss. I've driven it in a 2wd flying along at 80km/h without issue. Other times it's been an absolute bone-rattler, even in a SUV. There's nothing technical about the road, so small SUVs should be fine, but depending how long it's been since the council graded it the potholes can become really nasty. After rain you'll still be able to get through, you'll just have to drive slower. The time it takes to get to Yerranderie can vary greatly depending on conditions, so just drive safely and make sure you've got plenty of time in case it's slow going.

Rode down to Yerranderie on Sunday.

Road is very easy going at the moment - seems to be recently regraded. 2wd with a bit of ground clearance in the dry sort of difficulty, with a few shallow creek crossings. I wouldn't hesitate to do it in my Subaru wagon.

On an unrelated note - there's a parcel of land for sale deep in the catchment zone, with no apparent access of any kind. https://www.realestate.com.au/property- ... -202745614
Its lot 60 dp 757079 on Lacy's Creek under Mt Hoggett.

Only reference to it I can find is Wollondilly council writing off their unpaid levies in Jul'20.

I'm surprised these still exist, I very much doubt you'd have any truck trying to assert its 'residential land' status!

Ok.. a little bit of judicious googling found the following historical tidbits. Fascinating stuff.

pp 14 describes Catherine ("Granny Blattman"), as an immigrant from Germany brought out in the mid 1800's to help with Macarthur's interest in wine growing. She and her husband made their way to Burragorang and settled on Lacy's creek, he passed away, and she became known as the local doctor.

I'm guessing Owen Blattman (author of the article) may be the previous owner of the lot, prior to it being seized by Council for unpaid rates.

Several years ago, I recall when driving out along Scotts, being told by a senior member of the CBC of an isolated property out that way somewhere to the east that the owner had requested that road access be provided. The authority, who did not want to spend a fortune on doing this, found a loophole that theoretically the owner had access up a creek running into Lake Burragorang. The offshoot of this was that the owner was the only private individual who had the right to put a boat on the lake, but only in order to access the property. Sounds like it could be the same property. Unfortunately although the name of the creek was mentioned, it meant nothing to me at the time so was forgotten. My source was very reliable and the name would have confirmed. Either way an interesting story.

I was looking at the propertly recently and noticed there had been a new certificate of title issued this year, which caught my interest. Didn't realise it was for sale.

NSW LRS has the following record. Looks like the S713 LOC GOV ACT refer to Sale of land for unpaid rates and charges, see http://www5.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/consol_act/lga1993182/s713.html

I wonder if this transfer is to the council which is selling it in this listing, or if it's already been sold to someone and now it's being sold on again?

Just checked back on this, looks like it sold on 14 June 2021 for $70,000... pretty crazy given the location and the original buying price!

Is the village still functioning? I went there 30 years ago when Val Luede(?) was running it. There was a guest house and a big camping area as well as a lot of ramshackle buildings.

The guest house seems to be closed - when we went past it a few years ago.
The big camping area is still there of course. You might have to fight off the wallabies.
Some of the 'ramshackle' buildings are being restored. There were tradesmen working on them!
There's a nice picnic shelter with a water tank just through the village.

Val Lhuede donated her part of Yerranderie to NPWS a few years ago, as she was getting too old to run it. I thought she was still alive and kicking, but I could be wrong. I do know a distant relative.
