Postby Overlandman » Sun 06 Jan, 2013 7:31 pm

From ABC News
A man has fallen to his death at a popular tourist spot in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.
The man, believed to be aged in his 20s, fell from a walking track at Wentworth Falls this afternoon.
Rosa Petroccitto says she saw the man mucking about with his friends on some rocks and warned them to be careful.
"Then they went down to the next one and I knew something was going to happen," she said.
"We just saw them all panic and a 20-year-old boy fell over 100 metres down the waterfall.
"(It's) pretty sad, very unfortunate."
Police are at the scene investigating the man's death.

Update

Police will today try to retrieve the body of a British tourist who fell to his death at Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.
The 20-year-old man fell more than 80 metres at the popular tourist spot yesterday afternoon.
Witnesses say the man was skylarking on some rocks with a group of friends when he fell.
Witness Rosa Petroccitto says she warned the group to be careful.
"I saw a group of French and English kids, you know adults, mucking around on the rocks, and it's very slippery," she said.
"Then they went down to the next one and I knew something was going to happen. We just saw them all panic and a 20-year-old boy fell over 100 metres down the waterfall.
"[It's] pretty sad, very unfortunate."

Emergency crews were called to Wentworth Falls about 2:30pm, but strong winds hampered efforts to recover the man's body.
Police believe the man's death is not suspicious and say it is likely he fell accidentally.

Tragic, but not hugely surprising. The top of Wentworth Falls doesn't seem to drop away too sharply, tempting people close to the edge, but with slippery wet rock it would be easy to loose your footing. Once you start sliding down that drop there would be no stopping. Bad enough for this poor young bloke, but I can't begin to imagine how terrible it would have been for his friends to see him fall off that edge into the almighty abyss below!
Then again, the poor cops who had to guard the body overnight ahead of the recovery were hardly having a field day either. Terrible all round.
