hi,

I'm planning to explore bungonia over two days and I was wondering if it is possible to follow the red track through the canyon and then keep going along bungonia creek to sholheaven river campsite? We had some trips planned in wollemi but most of it is still closed so I'm looking for alternate parks. just following the white track to the campsite seems too short (even with packs) and it would be great to see the canyon too.

any good abseiling spots there? most likely we will have our ropes and stuff with us just in case.

Yep you can do a nice circuit- down red tract the ought the canyon, camp on Shoalhaven & back up the white track. Haven't abseiled there in years but there are plenty of spots I think- try google

As Lizzy said, the red and white tracks work well as a circuit.

No shortage of abseils, how long are your ropes?!
Slot canyon is easy till the end where there is some scrambling over and under some boulders, then it is easy walking to the river.
The aftermath of the floods early this year are very much apparent on the shoalhaven/ bungonia creek junction.
The best campsite is on bungonia creek on the bank of a big pool about 3/4 km or so back from the junction IMO.

I agree that the red and white tracks work well as a circuit, but the walk throught the rocky part of the canyon is slow going with a large (overnight) pack. As far as campsites go, I always preferred to walk up the Shoalhaven for half an hour or so from the junction of Bungonia Creek, where there is an amazing campsite. From here it is possible to head cross country straight up over Mt Ayre and rejoin the white track.

thank you everyone for advice! We heading there this weekend. finally no fires and no floods...

The red track in bungonia is amazing! We were all very impressed especially with the canyon. I have to admit we underestimated the walk. On the map it looked way too easy - around 5km a day. In reality it was very long and steep 5km... but totally worth the sweat
The area is pristine and beautiful. I think it is one of the most interesting places around Sydney.
