Solid 3 day hike - Blue mtns/Wollemi

Hello Happy Walkers,

tapping into your collective wisdom for a 'Solid' 3 day hike. 20 to 30k day type thing. Maybe stringing together a few trails, 'off road'. no ropes.

Was going to do AATW - Kiandra to Tharwa. Logistics getting in the way (although still a possibility).

Going Solo and need to test out newly acquired Hammock (from this site).

Suggestions, thoughts welcome.

Did Mtn Solitary earlier in the year. write up below if interested:

Kanangara to Katoomba may be what you're after, although transport may be an issue to get to the start at Kanagara walls.

Thanks this looks like a plan. Is there a way to cut across to the federal pass, rather than doing a fire trail on narrow neck?

Hi Paradza,

You can't real get from the K2K track across to the Federal Pass directly. However, if you walk along Narrow Neck North past the locked gate and to the start of the Golden Stairs, you can walk down those to the Federal Pass.

May I ask why you want to like up to the Federal Pass? If it's to avoid the trip along the Narrow Neck fire trail, then you are out of luck (unless you are super adventurous - Google the Mt Rennie Tunnel)

If you're even more adventurous, bordering on crazy (full pack down chains etc), you can access the Federal Pass by descending Walls Pass and coming out near the Ruined Castle. This will avoid avoid 2/3rds of Narrow Neck, but will probably add another day to your trip!

That would be more adventurous! You'd probably have to carry a small hand line, because unlike the chains on Carlon Head, Walls Pass has one fixed at either end and part way down. This stops you from hauling the chain to the top, attaching your pack to the end, and then lowering the pack down. I guess you could always throw it! haha

I don't think the climb down the chains is the hardest part though, the route down to Cedar Ck isn't exactly straight forward.

A route from Medlow Gap around the base of Mt Debert and Narrow Neck then across Cedar Valley and linking up with the Mt Solitary track would be a good finish to the K to K, rather than the long fire trail walk. If someone has the urge to create a new track this could be it!

One bushwalker friend once said that the walk along Narrow Neck is "good for the soul, but not for the soles".

It would have been a really nice walk back in the old days when there was no road - just a track.

There are many possibilities. Here area few suggestions. Some require good navigational skills and some scrambling (but not rope) -

1. Kanangra - Cambage Spire - Kowmung River - Bulga Denis Canyon - Orange Bluff - Brumby Ridge - Kanangra Walls
2. Kanangra - Gingra Range - Brumby Ridge - Orange Bluff - Kowmung River - Ferny Flat - Hughes Ridge - Gingra Range - Kanangra
3. Kanangra - Mt Cloudmaker - Ti Willa - Campagnoni's Pass- Kowmung River - Gingra Range - Kanangra
4. Kanangra - Cambage Spire - Kowmung River - Bulga Range - Scotts Main Range - Byrnes Gap - Axehead Mtn Traverse - Butchers Ck - Denis Range - Kowmung River - Roots Ridge - Gingra Range - Kanangra
5. Carlons Farm - Breakfast Ck - Coxs River - Kanongaroo - Yellow Pup - Splendour Rock - Blackhorse Range - Carlons Ck - Carlons Farm
6. Newnes - Pipeline Track - Wolgan/Capertee divide - Little Capertee Ck
7. Newnes - Mt Dawson - Red Rocks - Newnes
8. Baal Bone Gap - Baal Bone Point - Pantoneys Crown - Point Cameron - Mcleans Gap

A fire trail already exists! The problem is that the track goes through the Scheduled 1 catchment area...

From the 'Find Walking Companions sub-forum;

paradza wrote:Hi, any fine Sole (Trail Angel) willing and able to drive me to the start of the K2K? Take my car and drop it off back at katoomba. Happy to pay for your time, contribute. As I say this Friday.

Many thanks

Best wishes for this weekend, Paradza. Maybe you could have linked this request back to this thread. I was following this page, enjoying reflecting on all the walks I have done to these places mentioned - but not bothering to read 'Find Walking Companions' until this morning. Was at home yesterday, weeding and cleaning and measuring up for a shed. Off to work now...

Thanks so much for all your advice.
Let's say it's K2K-1. Paradza-0. Convinced my daughter to take me. I'm sure Kanawha walls were there. Just could see them for the fog. Ended being holed up at Crafts walls. Under the overhang. Anyway 12k later ended up back at the walls. Ready to spend the night in the car park shelter. An offer by a magic guy Chris who also abandoned. So back in Sydney. Need to return shortly to square the score. With GPS. Thanks again.

Sounds like the mighty Mt Cloudmaker was doing it's job! Good to hear you gave it a shot though, poor weather can alway make things quite difficult.
