The Warrumbungles

Postby khouw » Wed 09 Apr, 2014 3:19 pm

Thinking of hiking in the Bungles over Easter long weekend. Does anybody know which tracks/campsites are open? Due to the massive 2013 bushfire the NPWS shutdown the entire park but I understand from NPWS Sydney contacts they are reopening the trails again. I'd like to do the Grand High Top again with side trips to say Mt Exmouth etc. I presume water will be gold. If anyone know the current condition appreciate a report here.

Let me google that for you...

If you go to the NPWS park closures page (http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/alert/state-alerts) and scroll down to Warrumbungle National Park you will find the following, which was updated last week. There's also a phone number for the local NPWS office, which I'd recommend calling.

Following bushfire in January 2013, Warrumbungle National Park is open in a limited capacity. Some walking trails remain closed for restoration work.
Picnic area - OPEN
Canyon picnic area is a day-use area which offers electric BBQs and picnic tables only. No amenities available. Camp Blackman 1 is also suitable as a day-use area with gas BBQs, sheltered picnic tables and amenities available.
Camping Grounds - OPEN
Camp Blackman: for families and individuals, fees apply, bookings not available. Powered and unpowered tent and van sites are available. Facilities include untreated water, hot showers, laundry basins, flushing toilets and gas BBQs.
Camp Wambelong: individual and family camping. Unpowered sites only. Fees apply. Toilets and untreated water provided.
Camp Walaay: group camping facilities, fees apply. Toilets and untreated water provided. Bookings are essential, contact the visitor centre.
Walking Tracks
Belougery Split Rock, Burbie Canyon, Mount Exmouth and Whitegum Lookout Walk are the only walking tracks OPEN.
Vehicle entry fee's remain waived until further notice.
For more information please contact the Warrumbungles Visitor Centre on 02 6825 4364.

FatCanyoner, thank you for the info, accordingly have called them. Grand High Tops circuit (only via Balor Hut) is open. However many of the tracks & remote campgrounds are closed but some more will be reopened in time for Easter. Ranger at visitor centre suggest a quick phone call just before the trip to get latest update.

PS One more query: I know there isn't water source at Ogma Gap campground but apart from Balor Hut, is there a closer supply, a creek perhaps, anybody know?
