K2K: Go A Way

Postby juxtaposer » Mon 07 Jul, 2014 6:30 pm

Do we really have to suffer the name of this wonderful walk being reduced to next to nothing like this? It's gotten so bad, that recently I saw in a newsletter of a prominent club, a reference to a party on Kanangra Plateau following the "K2K track". I feel obliged to point out that the track over Kanangra Plateau leads to a lot more places than Katoomba. Can someone please explain what the appeal of this is? I'm only guessing, but does it perhaps make it more convenient to "twitter" from points along the way? Please don't tell me that it just sounds cool, for God's sake: it's every bit as bad as the habit a lot of people were falling into in recent times of referring to the "Dunphy Car Park"(shudder).

Wait till it just gets shortened to K2, give it a few more years and and it will just be called 'K' to rival the 'G'. Nah nothing can rival the 'G'!

Actually if it was called the 'K2' that would save me a trip to the Himalayas :D

I thought you were talking about Kiandra to Kosciusko, so yet another reason to not use such abbreviations.

SBW is guilty, but "K2K in a Day" does have a certain rhyme and rhythm to it!

I've generally resisted the 6 Foot Track being shortened to 6FT, as many people try to do!

And I'm anal about Dunphys Camping Area (no, it's not a car park).

And some just keep using 'Carlons'.

Now I see. The abbreviation came about when the SBW started regularly doing the walk in a day; they cut the time and the name down to size. But please, no "The K2K Track". As for the Dunphy Camping Area, I'm with Grabeach on that. It was always known as Carlons Farm (though the Carlon family called it "Green Gully"). Doesn't NPWS own the property now? If so, I don't know why they felt the need to give the camping area its own name.

The only way you'd get Sonny Bill into the bush is if you offered him a contract.

Maybe there's something going on behind the scenes and The Overlandman is set to make a big announcement. You know, a soft lead in and then Sonny Bill says we are the preeminent bushwalking website and everyone flocks to our forum.

Seriously, why not go and talk to the involved club and/or promoter of the term? What's the point of "promoting" it here? There's no bad publicity and now I am thinking of H2H. It's a storm in a tea cup first world problem.
Just move it!

A cheeky article on the "K to K" from The Sydney Bushwalker in 1993.

For those who haven't been out the the locked gate on Narrow Neck recently, the NPWS have installed a double sided information board on the area, including maps and history. There is also a sign with here and at Clear Hill pointing the way for the "Katoomba to Kanangra (K2K)" along with a distance. Looks like NPWS have taken on the abbreviation as well.
