Kid friendly camp and walk ideas in NSW

Postby Kainas » Fri 01 Aug, 2014 11:15 pm

I live in Cessnock NSW, I have two young children (2.5 and 4.5), both very active and outdoor kids, but I have not really done any walks with them, and I have not done any serious walks for several years.

I am itching to go camping, eating camping food and do a couple of Easy walks to see how the kids fare. I have been looking at quite a few resources that I have on hand (www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au is brilliant) and I am feeling really overwhelmed by the amount of options, given that I don't know the area very well.

I don't mind driving up to 4 or 5 hours and spending a couple of nights at a campsite, if the area was particularly interesting (though, kids are awesome they find interest in absolutely everything).

Thoughts and suggestions are very welcome.

For something nearby, you could try the Watagans NP. There's camping and some options for short walks.

Further afield, Newnes (Wollemi NP) is great. Big camping area, spectacular cliffs, a river, often see wombats and kangaroos.

Thanks for the suggestions. We have been pouring over maps and the national parks website trying to decide what parks to visit.... I think the answer is as many as possible. Now that we have both realised that the kids are old enough we are suddenly chomping at the bit to get out.

I think we will head to Freeman's Waterhole (Dhurgo NP) and camp at Mill Creek Campground. We can do the Old Great North Road on bike and the Grass Tree Circuit (1.6km) sounds perfect for seeing how our kids go.
Wollemi NP is high on my list. For some reason I have the Watagans pegged as the place people go to 4WD.
