Camping near Wakefield Trackhead of The Great North Walk

Postby jackattack » Fri 03 Jul, 2015 6:11 pm

I have the Department of Lands guide maps for The Great North Walk. On map 5 - The Watagan Track - there is a tent symbol indicating camping is available at the Wakefield Trackhead - Eddie Peterson Memorial Park. I have googled and read the wildkwalks notes but can't find any supporting evidence that camping is allowed and safe there. I want to split the Heaton Gap to Teralba Station walk in two as I am a big bloke and new to hiking. It would be nice to practice walk - camp - walk where I can bug out by Taxi if needed and still chip away at my goal of finishing the GNW in sections. I have already completed Merwether Ocean baths to Newcastle and Charlestown Trackhead to Merewether.

Thankyou for the help in advance,

Jack

If you use google maps and use the street view function you can get an idea of what you are in for (the tennis courts are unused so don't worry about them). It isn't much, but I guess you could hide away from public view. I wouldn't like to be in public view from the road, but it seems like a quiet spot. The track leading into Wakefield is a bit of a local dumping ground, but the park is not so bad and may suit your needs. There is water, and public toilets. You could call up a taxi and camp at the Teralba pub and return to Wakefield next day :D

I made it all the way from Heaton Gap to Teralba. Camping is banned by lake Macquarie council in the Edie Petersen Memorial park. Might be able to hide down the back, to the left looking towards the rear of reserve, away from the small structure/hall.
