Great North Walk Camping, Water and other tips

Hi all
I've just joined this forum so I apologise if this has been asked before, I did do a search. My friend and I are considering doing a section of the Great North Walk in a few weeks time taking approx 2-3 days. My biggest concern is being alone in our tent at night (we're both female) and where to actually set up camp along the way. Can we just pitch a tent anywhere? Also, how to know if we're going in the right direction? And also where to find drinkable water? Also any other tips would be very welcome. Thanks in advance from a first time trekker
