Here are a few pics of recent trip from Jones Creek/Ettrema Creek.

The floods came through with such intensity it is hard to comprehend.

A few photos attached, I will post more. Most from junction of Ettrema/Jones.

We used ropes to measure cross section of highest flood level (using debris on banks and scour), and worked out creek was 40m across and 4m deep at height of flood (about 100m downstream of Jones/Ettrema junction).

We also measured the "base flow" which was 1.7m across and 0.7 deep at the same point. The means a cross section size in the order of 100 times "base flow" (with no allowance for different velocities).

The last photo shows a rock up in a tree trunk. Obviously this was carried up here in the water column, and just happened to stay there afterwards. This would indicate a velocity far in excess of the regular flow.

In many places there were fresh chips/fragments taken out of the basement rocks in the stream bed.

Wow! It would have been quite a sight. Should get out there at the next heavy rain period to watch nature at work. Sure the rock wasn't placed there by someone? Too well balanced.

When you see the level of destruction/movement from the flood, anything is possible.

During the flood the cross section of the creek in some places was well over 50 square metres.

IN four days of walking we only saw one cairn, so unless placing rocks on trees is the new navigational marking system, I'd seriously doubt someone put it there.

Last time I was in that place, around Easter, the Ettrema/Jones junction was totally choked by the river rubble. It had a hump that a bobcat would take all day to move.

No doubt that stone could end up in the tree naturally, the force in those type of floods is an awesome, brutal thing.

I agree GPS, it would be a sight to behold live... But I'll do it from a nice high bluff, imagine the horror of accidentally slipping in!!!!

Amazing stuff! Puts a dry weather walker to shame.
