looking for intel on Goyder's Grove / Leura Fishing Pond

Postby jonnosan » Sun 30 Mar, 2025 6:19 pm

Just wondering if anyone has any intel on an old track to "Goyder's Grove" that was apparantly below Leura Cascades.

I came across a reference to it in a recent "Blue Mountains Heritage" newsletter http://bluemountainsheritage.com.au/wp- ... b-2021.pdf

The track to it is shown in the 1903 Mountaineer Guide Map which is included in the Jim smith book about the Lindemann track

However I cant make sense of the perspective on that map. I *think* the route its showing goes roughly in line with Sublime Pt F/T. But the map unfortunately cuts out before marking the actual grove.

I also found the following article on Trove which talks about "Leura Fishing Ponds" as being further along the same track. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/arti ... F164998740

Anyone know more about where those spots might have been?

SB F/T was built in 1950's - https://monumentaustralia.org.au/downlo ... roduct=926. The Grove may be the levelish area where the sewerage works was sited. The sewerage plant didn't open til 1935 - see series of pages starting at https://bluemountainshistory.com/katoom ... apter-one/

The rest of the map (Mountaineer Guide Map) is fairly rough which might explain its deviation from the current F/T. It's unlikely that any track would head straight down the slope - the existing F/T is steep enough and it has multiple hairpins. I reckon the cartographer never actually walked it. Federal Pass & Goyders Grove route are both Roads according to the key!

Maybe the ponds are where the F/T crosses Leura Falls Creek - there's a bit of still water there.

Maybe visit https://bluemountainshistory.com/ in Wenty ?
