current condition of Diamantina spur

Mon 22 Apr, 2013 1:25 pm

Hi guys,

I am planning a feathertop hike via mt loch and diamantina spur over anzac
Just remembered about current fire there and wondering about the condition of the trail.

Has anyone been there recently?

Was on the opposite side of the valley not long after the fires, and from what I could see, the spur itself was not burnt, so you should have no other difficulties apart from the usual that it presents.

The fire burnt up the western slopes but pretty much stopped on the ridge so Diamantina should be unburnt. It will be steep and tiring ... have fun.

Thanks for that update. Yup. steep and tiring. so I have heard. At least it is not going to be boiling hot. I am going to tackle it while I am still physically able. Just concern about the track visibility.

The route I take will depend on where I get dropped off. Anyway, it is 4 days of alpine bliss for me.

I'll probably get laughed at here, but Diamantina Spur is not particularly that steep overall.

I find that the reason the spur gets its bad name is because the first kilometer or so is very steep, so much so that it exhausts you enough to make the last 2 - 3 kilometers sheer agony.

Beautiful spur though, thoroughly recommended. One of my favourites, I've done it a few times.

As for navigation, as long as you are heading up, you're on the right track. That said, I've never lost the track.

just got back. I agree it is not that steep overall.
There are a few parts where it is steep especially the really rocky bits and there were parts where I kind of have to climb hand and feet.
What I hate about it is how it goes on and on. Should have paid more attention to the map.

Any thoughts on snow shoeing up the Diamantina?

I snowshoed up it a two months ago just after a fairly heavy snowfall. It was very hard work, especially the parts where I was sinking up over my knees even with the snowshoes on. It obviously wouldn't be like that now and it's definitely worthwhile doing as you get spectacular views of Feathertop on the way up.

I concur with photonaturally that it goes on and on and on...

I posted a trip report with a couple of pictures - http://forums.ski.com.au/forums/ubbthre ... ost2023430

Thanks, Jimmy. I was there on the weekend and had a pretty nice time. I'll try to find some time to put together a trip report over the next week or so.
