Mount Baw Baw to Walhalla

Wed 19 Jun, 2013 12:33 pm

Has anyone ever walked this in winter? The family is going skiing at Baw Baw for a couple of days and I'm thinking of walking out down to Walhalla and meeting them there. Anything to look out for? I think there's a camping spot on Mount Erica Road near Mushroom Rocks...

Baw-Baw to Walhalla is about 36 km, so definitely 2-3 night in winter.

Mushroom rocks is about 1.5 km beyond the end of Mt Erica road - about 1100 m altitude.

There also O'Shea's Mill Site at the bottom of the mountain as an alternate campsite.

Take a look at http://www.australianalps.environment.gov.au/walktrack/pubs/map-01.pdf for a sketch map. You will need a topo map for actual navigation.

You can bivie at Mushroom Rocks. Don't camp at the road.

As well as mushroom rocks there is a campground with platforms about 2km before you get to the mount Erica carpark

I have not camped there but the site looks good

Have a look at the Great Walhalla Alpine Trail website ~ http://www.greatwalhallaalpinetrail.com/
It is a guided walk, but you can certainly use the website for photos, maps and ideas.
Dont forget that who ever drops you off at Baw Baw will need wheel chains to enter. The road from Moe to Baw Baw via Erica is the best way to drive. It avoids the very windy road through Neerim.
If you are staying at Baw Baw before you leave, you can book accom at http://www.mountbawbaw.com.au
If you want to stay in Walhalla once you arrive, check out http://www.visitwalhalla.com/
Go in August and see the Walhalla Vinter Ljusfest. Paddy O'Down concerts on Wed nights, historic train rides on Sat night and heaps more.
You have picked a great walk and an amazing time to do it
Good luck
Cheers
Sue
