Overnight Beeripmo Walk

Hi fellow Hikers,
First of all I would like to thank snowzone for coming with me on this hike, the knowledge and experience passed on to me was fantastic so once again thank you.
We started at Richards campground at 0930 and headed off the original goal was to get to the Beeripmo camp and stay there but with the likely hood of some rough weather we decided to hike on to Mugwamp. The morning started off with sunshine in the sky but soon started to come over a bit dark and light drizzle started then stopped, started then stopped. It meant the jacket was on then off and then it just stayed on. The scenery on this hike is wonderful, the view from the sugarloaf lookout was beautiful. In parts of the hike to Mugwamp light snow started and snowzone said we might be lucky enough for some real snow to fall. I was thinking to myself why would anyone want to be caught out in the snow while out on a hiking trip anyway it was something different for me and I was excited. We got to Mugwamp and a big thank you to the person who had not long left the hut, as the fire was still going and there was a supply of wood for us to use, the fire was stoked and we set up our tents and came back into the hut and then it started. It was snowing which to my surprise was very exciting as I had never seen snow falling, I am 42 and this is the first time I had seen falling snow. I was like a kid in a candy store it wasn't cold and the flakes were so big and soft, just like you see in fairy tales. I took quite a few photos just of the snow falling it was great. I had a good night sleep and we left the next morning and the snow was still everywhere a few more photos where taken and about 2hrs later we were back at Richards. This was a fantastic hike for me as a newby to the hiking scene, I will be doing lots more and won't be worried if the forecast says snow, I will probably more than likely seak out the snow once I have some better gear. attached few photos

Nice walk! Q: What's the story with that snow covered tent? Didn't you guys stay in the hut?

I had a new tent that I wanted to test, just as simple as that. And I don't think it was that cold.

Thanks for suggesting the walk Jason, I'm always happy to spend time out in this area no matter what the weather. Its a beautiful area at any time.

We just used the hut for shelter while cooking and seeing as someone was so kind as to leave a fire burning we thought someone should enjoy it. Normally I would not be so happy about finding a fire left going but in this case it was very welcoming.

There has been some good falls locally this week Chris, surprised your not out enjoying them yourself.

Been very lucky to get snow there a few times this year and it would have been great to walk in. Good thing is it never gets cold enough there to be a worry.

I wish I could! I've got postgrad papers coming out of my ears. When I get a moment I've then got the kids. So it's been an horror year for hikes. I am counting down the days until the 6th of September to head up to Feathertop/Mt Loch!

Day walked the Beeripmo track on Sunday and came across a koala on Sugarloaf. He/she was quite near the track at the time. Just thought I would mention this as a follow on to a discussion that was had about koalas in this area on another thread, viewtopic.php?f=37&t=9558
So after many years of no sightings in this area, I have now seen two in around a year. This on the same week that the Quoll was found in the Grampians, a great week for animal populations in Western Vic.

Dad and I are thinking of walking the Beeripmo as an overnighter this Monday/Tuesday, and due to potential thunderstorms, we have decided camping at Mugwamp might be the go. If there is a thunderstorm, the hut should offer some protection. Just wondering, is there a water tank at Mugwamp? If so, is there likely to be plenty in there?

I don't think there is Sam. I can't recall seeing a tank last time I was there and we have not had any decent rain for such a while any water up that way may be unreliable.

Sounds like you are going to do the walk anti clockwise. If it were me, because everything is so accessible by car, I would put a water stash at Mugwamp and then drive back to Richards for the start. After you finish the walk you could drive back to mugwamp and collect any containers you did not want to carry for the rest of the walk.

It is a great walk but reckon there will be quite a few bods up there over Easter. Hope you enjoy it.

Otherwise, if you're going clockwise, you can get water at Beeripmo Camp... From memory there's a tank there.
There is a creek at Mugwamp, but unlikely to be running right now.

Small amount of water in the creek at mugwamp. No tank. Will be plenty of water at both beeripmo and Richards

We will carry enough water with us to be on the safe side, but we might get some from the tank at Beeripmo when we pass through
