Hi all. Hoping that a "local" to NE Vic can help me out find a club to do some walks. I am 41 and reasonably fit, but more into weekend day walks than full on hiking/camping trips. Wanting to combine some fitness with meeting people. Walking on your own is peaceful but ultimately not very social!
I enquired at one club but was told they are more into cycling so I just thought I'd save myself the hassle and ask on this forum. If you are a member of a particular local club and can recommend it I'd appreciate it if you could let me know. I live in Wangaratta so am quite central to the area, the club does not necessarily have to be in this town.
Thanks.
Greg.

Greg, I suggest that you start with the BWA website at http://www.bushwalkingvictoria.org.au/. They have a list of clubs. Whilst Melbourne has a number of good walks close and not so close, you are well-placed for the High Plains and Kosciuszko, 2-3 hours and 4-5 hours respectively. Nice. I was in Wangaratta a few weekends ago. It's hard to believe that the main street was one the highway. Yikes!

Thanks for the info. Yes I still remember the semis thundering down Murphy St in my younger years, but it is still a busy road even with the bypass.

Hi Greg
If you are still looking for a club based in the north east I would recommend Benalla Bushwalking Club. They do quite a good range of activities and there are a number of their members that live in Wangaratta too. Border Bushwalking Club in Albury-Wodonga would be another good prospect as they are a large and very active club. Warby Range might also be OK. See the following for details about each club

hi gregga, i'm a bit late on the scene having only recently found this website. i live in eldorado just out of wang. all the aformentined clubs are social walking clubs that provide a range of walk options. most walks are on w'ends. i am a member of the warby range bushwalkers and border bushwalkers. the border club often do day walks in the high country over spr/summer/aut. warby club tend to do more o/nght stays in chalet/lodges. cooler months will see more walking on the "flats" with the occasional venture to the snow for those that like it. i'm something of a novice at leading walks but i'm doing one with the warby club late october, eldorado to mt pilot , 20 and a bit k's, one way car shuffle. google the club w/site, there will be shorter walks as well. cheers, ian
