Beginners snowwalk and overnight camp near Melbourne?

Hi,
I was just looking for an overnight walk with camping in the snow near Melbourne suitable for a beginner. Was thinking short walk in on a dirt track then walk a bit on snow with normal shoes then camp and walk out.

Possibly Barnwell Plains near Mt Torbreck if it gets some snow.
The ordinary shoes is not a good idea though. The type of light snow cover you will get
in the circumstances you descibe will be wet and slushy or if not very icy and very slippery.
Cold wet feet make for a very uncomfortable time, ice is just plain treacherous.

Mt st gwinear is good for that. I spoke to andrewbish a short while ago and he was going to organize a trip up there in august I think. I was planning on going up there as soon as it got snow cover. In one of the library's in the city at the start of july there is a talk on snow shoeing and camping in the snow. I will post the details soon. Wellington Plains or long Plains are also good

Car entry to lake mountain is $53, stay overnight and they'd probably want $106. I'd recommend Mt Stirling around Bluff Spur Hut or the Razorback Huts (I think that's what they're called) and using snow shoes or skis.

You don't have to pay entry if you take the walking track up [ although I haven't walked up in the last 20 years ] there used to be plenty of space to park at the start of the track up.
Signage may now be missing due to the fires I suppose

Yak Trax or Microspikes would be one way of dealing with ice, but will not stop you post-holing in deep soft snow.

jb plain on dinner plain side is a good spot i found for indroducing into snow camping, you can camp out near the hut, which is only 10min walk off road but then you fill in your day/s exploring the area theres a mt (something or other) which is is a good learning exercise for snowshoes or xc skiing, dunno if thats sorta what your after

X2 on bluff spur and razorback hut. The cross country trails might be managable on shoe, I'd however spend $30ish bucks on hiring snow shoes....

Actually, I'm doing both! Falls next weekend and Mt St Gwinear in 2 weeks time. Maybe Kosciosko after that.
Can't wait - I've been away from snow for two years!

Hi David. Can recommend Mt St Gwinear, near Walhalla. Hire some snow shoes and you'll have a ball. PM me if you need help with hire (I know a guy hiring out Yowies)

Getting pretty cocky for a blood who hasn't done anything in awhile must be getting excited about going away this weekend finally!

Indeed Walkon. Forecast for Falls on Saturday night is a low of -7C. Excellent chance to try out my MYOG down winter quilt, which I finished today (after 15 mths of stuffing around with it)
