Best time for Great Ocean Walk

Mon 21 Jul, 2014 8:59 am

I am thinking of taking some friends on the Great Ocean Walk next year, and wondered when the best time would be.

Summer is going to be too hot for walking, and there is the risk of bushfires. Winter will probably be fairly bleak and cold I suspect. So spring or autumn look like the go.

When is the weather most stable, ie, fine and not too windy?

Will there be water in the tanks at that time?

Can't be specific on the location but Autumn has the best and most stable weather down here in Melbourne and the parts of Vic that I visit regularly David.

Agree with this although we still get really hot days in March so you might want to give this month a miss if you are worried about the heat.

I am not 100% sure about this but the track is located near one of the wettest areas of the state so there is a good chance there will be water in the tanks.

Hi David

I did the GOW a couple of years ago in early May - great hike, but I think we had about 5 minutes of sun in the entire week and the rest of the time it blew a gale and hailed :D

If I did it again I would probably look at late March, early April as a good balance weather wise.

I don't think you'd have any trouble with the water tanks, it's a pretty high rainfall area at the best of times.
