I'm looking at doing an overnight snowshoeing hike with some mates over the weekend of the 2nd August.
We went to Stirling last year, is there anything suitable closer than that? Does Lake Mountain/Baw Baw/Donna Buang have anything suitable, that won't avalanche on us?

An avalanche at Lake Mountain/Baw Baw/Donna Buang would require quite an effort.
They all tend to have average snowcover and tend to be at their best for about a week after a semi-decent dump.
There are no big fronts forecast anytime soon.
If all you want is to see some snow on the ground and get the chance to be cold, then they should all be quite fine, just don't expect to be able to make a snow-cave.

Yeah, that's pretty much it, but with decent and consistent snow cover.

We did a nice walk from Baw Baw Resort to the AAWT and back in Autumn. It was lovely. You can alter the length of the snowshoeing trip by the distance you travel along the AAWT. Today's snow report (
http://ski.com.au/snowreport.html)says Baw Baw has 58cm snow so you should have some consistent cover for most, if not all, of the way.

I walked from Baw Baw to the AAWT two weeks ago! By no means an overnight trip, but if you'd extend the walk to mt st Gwinear, you'd have a nice little overnighter I'd say. Awesome snow there the last two weekends. With the cold week we've had I would think that would still be the case, enjoy!
